By April, the snow in the Vermont mountains melted away, giving way to rolling fields of green grass, blooming wildflowers, and rushing streams fed by spring rain.
The Vermont research facility was fully operational, employing twelve top-tier hydraulic engineers and technicians from across the country. Our decentralized water systems were actively deployed in three southwestern states, providing clean, life-saving water to over two hundred thousand residents.
My health checkup at the oncology clinic in Boston yielded pristine results: full, uncompromised clinical remission, entering its third consecutive year. My hair was thick, dark, and radiant, falling in soft waves past my shoulders. The physical scars of chemotherapy were nothing more than a faint memory, overshadowed by the vibrant, pulsing vitality of my everyday life.
On a warm Saturday morning, Silas and I stood on the wide wooden deck of our Vermont home, planting rows of cascading hydrangeas along the garden railing.
"You know," Silas said, wiping a speck of garden soil off his cheek with the back of his work glove, "if someone had told us three years ago that we'd be running a multi-million-dollar tech firm from a rustic mountain sanctuary while raising a golden retriever puppy, what would you have said?"
I laughed, setting down my trowel and walking over to wrap my arms around his neck, resting my head against his chest.
