Chapter 8 - The True Royalty

That evening, the local community center hosted the rescheduled school spring charity gala—the exact event Vanessa Sterling had tried to ruin.

When Mia and I walked through the double doors of the grand ballroom, all conversation didn't stop in shock; instead, a warm, spontaneous wave of applause rippled through the room. Parents who had previously looked away now smiled brightly, waving and calling out our names.

Several mothers walked over to greet us, offering genuine apologies and welcoming Mia back into the circle of children playing near the stage.

I stood near the edge of the ballroom, holding a glass of sparkling cider, watching my daughter spin around in her new blue dress, her laughter mingling with the music. She wasn't hiding in a dark corner anymore. She wasn't shrinking away from anyone. She stood tall, proud, and completely radiant.

Marcus walked up beside me, handing me a small pastry from the dessert table. “You know, for a structural designer, you certainly know how to bring down a poorly built house.”

I laughed, taking a bite of the pastry. “It’s all about finding the weak point in the foundation, Marcus. If the foundation is built on lies, arrogance, and cruelty, it doesn't take much weight to make the whole thing crumble.”

“And what about you and Mia?” Marcus asked gently, looking out at the dance floor. “What’s next?”

I looked down at my daughter, who caught my eye from across the room and flashed a joyful, triumphant grin.

“We build something better,” I said softly. “Something real. Something unbreakable.”
