Chapter 7 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Two weeks later, the morning sun poured warmly through the windows of our home.
Mia sat at the kitchen island, happily eating pancakes dusted with powdered sugar. Instead of the ruined pink dress from the school gala, she wore a brand-new, beautiful sky-blue dress that we had picked out together over the weekend.
My phone rested beside my coffee cup, buzzing quietly with notifications from the local news outlets. The headlines blared across every regional screen: “Oakridge Real Estate Tycoon Richard Sterling Arrested in Major Corporate Fraud Scandal; Wife’s School Bullying Video Sparks Federal Investigation.”
The Sterling family’s social standing had completely evaporated. Their friends had vanished, their elite club memberships had been cancelled, and Richard Sterling was facing up to ten years in federal prison for financial forgery.
A sharp knock sounded at our front door.
I walked over and pulled it open. Standing on the porch wasn't a process server or a hostile neighbor, but Principal Thomas, holding a large, beautifully wrapped gift box with a pink ribbon.
“Good morning, Elena,” Principal Thomas smiled warmly.
“Principal Thomas! Please, come in,” I said, stepping aside.
“I didn't come to talk business today,” he said, placing the box on the entryway table. “The faculty and parents' association took up a collection to replace Mia’s ruined dress from the gala—and to apologize properly for the unacceptable way she was treated on school grounds.”
Mia walked over from the kitchen, her eyes wide with curiosity as she looked at the large box. “Is this for me?”
“Open it and see, sweetheart,” Principal Thomas encouraged gently.
Mia carefully untied the pink ribbon and lifted the lid. Inside lay the most breathtaking princess dress we had ever seen—sparkling light blue tulle, delicate silver embroidery around the bodice, and a tiny, elegant silver tiara resting on top.
Mia gasped, her face lighting up with a brilliant, radiant smile that chased away every lingering shadow of that terrible night.

“Thank you!” Mia whispered happily, hugging the dress tightly against her chest.
