Chapter 6 - The Web Unravels

The conference room erupted into murmurs.

Mrs. Gable leaned forward, peering at the projected blueprints through her reading glasses. “Good heavens... is that a structural engineering seal?”

“It is,” I said, standing up and walking toward the screen like a lead prosecutor in a federal courtroom. “Or rather, it is a forged copy of my professional engineering seal, illegally utilized by Sterling Development Corporation to bypass mandatory municipal soil stabilization tests on their newest commercial plaza.”

Arthur Vance leaped to his feet, his professional composure completely shattering. “Objection! This board has no jurisdiction over municipal real estate development! This is an outrageous smear tactic completely unrelated to the school incident!”

“It’s entirely related, Mr. Vance,” a deep, authoritative voice echoed from the doorway.

The heavy oak door opened wider, and two men in dark suits stepped into the room. The lead investigator flashed a silver badge. “Special Agent Miller, California Department of Real Estate and Financial Crimes. Mr. Vance, your client’s commercial development has been under federal audit for the last forty-eight hours based on evidence provided by Ms. Hayes and her firm.”

Vanessa gasped, grabbing the edge of the table as the color drained completely from her face. She looked wildly at her lawyer. “Arthur! Do something! Tell them they can't do this!”

Arthur Vance slowly sat back down, his face pale as paper. He looked at the federal agents, then at me, and finally realized that the Sterling family’s multi-million-dollar empire had just hit an immovable brick wall.

“Mr. and Mrs. Sterling’s residential properties, corporate bank accounts, and development assets have been frozen pending a full forensic audit,” Agent Miller continued calmly, pulling a document from his leather folio. “Furthermore, warrants are being issued for Richard Sterling for corporate fraud and identity theft regarding the unauthorized use of professional credentials.”

The room was so quiet you could hear the hum of the projector fan.

Principal Thomas looked across the table at Vanessa, his expression cold and unforgiving. “Mrs. Sterling, effective immediately, your membership in the Oakridge Elementary PTA is revoked, and you are permanently banned from stepping foot on school property.”

Vanessa broke down. The unbreakable socialite mask finally cracked completely, and she buried her face in her hands, letting out a ragged sob of absolute humiliation and defeat.
