Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Queen Bee

Vanessa stared at the tablet screen as if it were a venomous snake. The color drained completely from her face, leaving her expensive makeup looking stark and harsh against her pale skin.
“That... that’s edited!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria as she lunged toward the principal to grab the tablet. “Someone manipulated the audio! It’s a glitch!”
Principal Thomas easily stepped out of her reach, holding the tablet high. “Every camera in this building is wired directly to the district’s secure cloud server, Mrs. Sterling. There is no editing, and there are no glitches.” He turned his gaze toward me, his expression softening with professional sympathy. “Mrs. Hayes, I am deeply sorry your daughter was subjected to this behavior in our school. Please, take her to my private office. Nurse Clara is already waiting inside with a fresh set of clothes.”
“Thank you, Principal,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion as I tightened my arms around Mia.
I stood up, lifting my daughter gently off the cold floor. As I walked past Vanessa, I didn't yell, threaten, or curse. I simply looked her dead in the eyes—the look of a mother whose protective instincts had just turned into absolute steel.
“You wanted to talk about broken homes, Vanessa?” I said quietly, close enough that only she could hear. “Let’s see how intact your precious family empire looks after the school board, the district superintendent, and the local news outlets finish reviewing that tablet.”
Vanessa opened her mouth to snap back, but no words came out. The surrounding parents were openly whispering, pulling out their phones to record her meltdown. Her reign as the untouchable queen bee of Oakridge Elementary had just imploded in less than sixty seconds.
Inside the principal's private office, the harsh fluorescent lights were dimmed. Nurse Clara, a kind woman with warm eyes, gently handed Mia a warm cup of apple cider and a soft, beautiful blue velvet dress that the school kept for emergency wardrobe mishaps.
“You’re safe here, sweetheart,” Nurse Clara murmured, gently brushing a stray lock of hair from Mia’s forehead.
I knelt beside my daughter, holding her small, trembling hands. “Are you okay, my little princess?”
Mia nodded slowly, her dark eyes looking up at me with profound trust. “You didn't let her hurt me, Mommy.”

“I will never let anyone hurt you,” I promised, kissing her knuckles. “Not ever.”
