Chapter 8 - The Rise of Vance Global

Rebuilding a corporate entity from the ashes of corporate fraud is no small feat, but under my direct leadership, Vance Global Enterprises became the most talked-about tech and digital asset firm in the Southeast. We specialized in ethical software integration, secure data infrastructure, and venture capital funding specifically targeted at female-led startups—a sector Nathan had always dismissed as unprofitable.

By the end of the fourth month, our downtown headquarters was bustling with over fifty brilliant software engineers, legal analysts, and financial consultants who treated one another with mutual respect and transparency.

I sat in my corner office on the top floor, reviewing the quarterly financial projections. The numbers weren't just good; they were record-breaking. Our initial public offerings had exceeded even Marcus's optimistic projections, and local business journals were already naming me one of Charleston's most influential entrepreneurs of the decade.

My intercom buzzed softly.

"Clara," my executive assistant's voice came through. "You have a visitor in the lobby. A representative from the Charleston Venture Capital Association requesting an unscheduled meeting."

"Did they make an appointment?" I asked, not looking up from my spreadsheet.

"Well, no. But it’s Julian Vance—no relation to your godfather, but he’s the primary director of the regional tech council. He says it’s regarding a major municipal digital infrastructure contract that recently opened up after Carter & Wales' complete dissolution."

I paused, a slow smile spreading across my face. Carter & Vale had officially filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation the week prior, its remaining assets auctioned off for pennies on the dollar.

"Send him up," I said.

Julian Vance turned out to be a sharp, energetic man in his late forties with keen eyes and an impressive track record in municipal tech development. As we sat across from each other in my sunlit conference room, he slid a thick folder across the mahogany table.

"Word on the street is that Vance Global is looking to expand its municipal portfolio," Julian said, leaning back in his chair. "The city council is desperate for a reliable, fully capitalized tech partner to overhaul the public transit data systems. Frankly, after the disaster with Nathan Carter’s firm, the city is vetting everyone with a magnifying glass."

"You don't need to worry about our capitalization, Julian," I replied, opening the folder to review the contract terms. "Every dollar of our backing is unencumbered, independently audited, and anchored by secure real estate and liquid capital. We don't rely on shell companies or forged bridge loans."

Julian laughed heartily. "I've read the forensic audit reports on your ex-husband's collapse, Ms. Sterling. Trust me, the city council knows exactly who holds the power in Charleston now. If your engineering team can deliver these specs by Friday, the contract is yours."
