Chapter 15 - The Verdict and the Sentence

The jury deliberation lasted less than four hours.
When the court reconvened that afternoon to read the verdict, the tension in the room was palpable. The foreperson stood up and delivered a unanimous verdict on all twelve counts of federal wire fraud, bank fraud, and identity theft.
Guilty.
Nathan buried his face in his shackled hands as the judge read the formal charges, his shoulders shaking with silent, desperate sobs.
Three weeks later, the sentencing hearing took place. The federal judge did not mince words when addressing Nathan’s blatant abuse of corporate trust and deliberate financial destruction of his partners and investors.
"Mr. Carter, your actions demonstrated a profound contempt for the law and an utter lack of remorse," the judge stated sternly from the bench. "You built an enterprise on deception, greed, and the exploitation of those who trusted you most. The court sentences you to fourteen years in a federal correctional facility, with no eligibility for parole for the first ten years."

The sound echoed through the courtroom like a final, definitive period at the end of a very long, painful sentence. As Nathan was escorted away by federal marshals, he cast one last, desperate look toward the back of the courtroom. But I wasn't there to watch him leave. I was already outside, standing beneath the warm Charleston sun, breathing in the fresh air of absolute freedom.
