Chapter 12 - An Unexpected Encounter

Mid-morning brought a rare break in my schedule, prompting me to step out for a walk down the historic Charleston waterfront. The salty air was crisp, and the streets were alive with the vibrant hum of local commerce. I stopped at a small artisanal café to grab a fresh espresso, enjoying the anonymity of the bustling crowd.

"Clara?"

A hesitant voice cut through the ambient noise of the sidewalk. I turned to find a woman standing near the café entrance, clutching a designer handbag that looked slightly worn at the seams. It took me a moment to recognize her without the immaculate styling and corporate armor she used to wear.

It was Victoria Lane.

She looked thinner, her eyes ringed with dark shadows, the picture of corporate grace entirely stripped away.

"Victoria," I acknowledged quietly, keeping my posture rigid and composed.

She swallowed hard, looking down at the pavement before meeting my gaze. "I heard about your new acquisition. Everyone in the southeast tech sector is talking about Vance Global. I just... I wanted to say I'm sorry. For everything."

"An apology from you is about as valuable as one of Nathan's forged bridge loans," I replied evenly, showing neither anger nor pity. "You made your choices, Victoria. You chose to build your career on a foundation of lies and manipulation."

"Nathan lied to me, too," she whispered, her voice cracking. "He promised me equity, power, a stake in the company. The moment his accounts were frozen, he threw me under the bus and blamed the entire scheme on my department. I lost my apartment, my reputation, and my savings."

"That sounds like a conversation you should have with a federal prosecutor, not with me," I said, turning to walk away.

"Clara, wait!" she pleaded softly. "Do you ever look back? Do you ever regret how completely you destroyed him?"

May you like

I paused, turning my head slightly to look her dead in the eye. "I didn't destroy him, Victoria. I simply stopped holding up a man who was built out of glass."

Without another word, I left her standing on the sidewalk and walked back toward the towering steel-and-glass offices of Vance Global, completely untethered from the ghosts of my past.
