Chapter 6 - The Shadows of Sullivan’s Island

The salty breeze of Sullivan’s Island carried the distant sound of crashing Atlantic waves, offering a much-needed sanctuary from the legal storm brewing in downtown Charleston. Sitting on the sun-drenched veranda of Marcus’s coastal home, I watched the morning fog lift off the marshlands. My phone had finally stopped vibrating with Nathan’s frantic text messages and missed calls. For the first time in a decade, my mind felt entirely clear, unburdened by the constant anxiety of walking on eggshells around a man who viewed my devotion as a weakness.

Marcus stepped onto the porch carrying two steaming mugs of black coffee, handing one to me with a reassuring nod. "The corporate restructuring papers for the downtown headquarters have cleared the municipal clerk's office," Marcus said, pulling up a wooden rocking chair. "Your father's trust is officially recognized as the primary lienholder and property owner. Carter & Vale as Nathan knew it no longer exists."

"How is Nathan handling the eviction notice?" I asked, wrapping my hands around the warm ceramic mug.

"Not well," Marcus chuckled, taking a sip. "His board of directors held an emergency session yesterday afternoon. When they realized Nathan had not only hidden massive liabilities from them but had also risked their physical office space with forged collateral documents, they voted unanimously to strip him of his CEO title. He’s facing a shareholder revolt, three separate breach-of-contract lawsuits, and a very aggressive forensic audit."

I looked out toward the horizon, watching a lone sailboat cut across the glistening water. "He thought he could trade me in like an outdated software program. He assumed I would quietly accept a messy divorce, take a modest alimony check, and crawl away into the background."

"People like Nathan only understand power when it's used against them," Marcus replied, his eyes sharp. "What are your plans for the building downtown? The local commercial real estate market is already buzzing, and several major tech firms have reached out to my office inquiring about the lease."

"We aren't leasing it out," I said calmly, a sharp, determined smile touching my lips. "We are launching a new enterprise. Vance Global Enterprises. And this time, every single asset, patent, and equity share will be owned by women who actually know how to build a business without stepping on the backs of everyone who trusted them."

Marcus raised his coffee mug in a silent toast. "Then let's show Charleston how a real empire is built."
