Chapter 9 - The Final Ledger

By early summer, the legal fallout reached its definitive conclusion.
A federal grand jury formally indicted Brandon and Marcus on twelve counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, and aggravated identity theft. Facing insurmountable forensic evidence and the testimony of their former co-conspirators, their defense attorneys submitted a plea proposal seeking sentence mitigation in exchange for a full, unreserved confession.
Jessica Vance called me from her office to brief me on the final settlement terms.
“It’s over, Charlotte,” Jessica told me over the secure line. “They agreed to a stipulated judgment forfeiting every remaining personal asset, transferring all claims on your property to the Mercer-Holloway Trust, and accepting a mandatory minimum sentence of twelve years without parole.”
“And Evelyn?” I asked quietly.
“Evelyn has been legally barred from approaching you, your daughter, or any property bearing your name under a permanent restraining order,” Jessica replied. “She’s currently trying to liquidate her remaining designer belongings to pay off her own mounting legal debts in Florida.”
I nodded slowly, looking out the large picture window toward the quiet, sunlit lawn.
“Thank you, Jessica. For everything.”
“You didn't need my help to win this, Charlotte,” Jessica said warmly. “You just needed the right tools to build your defense.”

I hung up the phone, feeling the last lingering shadow of the past evaporate into the summer air.
