Chapter 5 - The Forensic Audit Unveils the Core

For the next three days, the house echoed with the sound of legal consultations, high-speed document printing, and the quiet, methodical clicking of keyboards as Jessica Vance’s team of forensic accountants tore through every digital footprint Brandon and Marcus had left behind.
Every evening, Jessica and I sat at the dining room table reviewing the consolidated damage report.
“It’s worse than we initially thought, Charlotte,” Jessica said on Thursday night, sliding a financial ledger across the polished wood. “They didn't just siphon funds from your personal checking accounts. They had established a complex network of phantom subcontractors under Holloway & Associates, routing municipal development grants through shell accounts in Delaware.”
I studied the columns of numbers, my mind racing through the legal implications. “Can the federal prosecutor use this to pierce the corporate veil entirely?”
“Directly and permanently,” Jessica confirmed with a confident nod. “Marcus was the registered agent on paper, but Brandon signed every single authorization slip using a digital facsimile of your father’s estate seal. That elevates the charges from standard financial fraud to aggravated identity theft and elder-estate manipulation. They’re facing up to twenty years in federal custody.”
I closed the ledger, feeling a profound, unshakeable sense of closure washing over me.
For years, I had allowed myself to believe that keeping the peace, ignoring small warning signs, and trying to preserve a broken marriage was the right path for my daughter. I had let my guard down because I wanted to believe people were fundamentally decent.
My mother had taught me better before she passed away. “Never mistake a wolf for a stray dog,” she used to say. “A wolf will smile at you right up until the moment it tears down your door.”

Now, the wolves were locked out, and the door was reinforced with steel.
