Chapter 2 - The First Crack in the Facade

The heavy oak front door banged open before I even reached the bottom landing.
Brandon strode into the foyer, his face flushed with wine and irritation, shedding his overcoat onto the antique bench as if he owned the place. Evelyn sailed past him, her nose tilted upward, immediately inspecting the entryway molding with a critical eye.
“Charlotte! Good, you’re home,” Brandon barked, unbuttoning his collar as he headed toward the kitchen. “We need to talk about the catering budget for this weekend’s dinner party. “The refrigerator isn't broken, Evelyn,” I said, my voice quiet, even, and entirely devoid of emotion. “It’s secure. Just like every other asset in this house.”
Brandon frowned, stepping closer. “What are you talking about? What kind of game are you playing, Charlotte? My mother and brother are guests here.”
“Guests don't forge power-of-attorney documents to take out clandestine home equity loans,” I replied, my gaze locking onto his shifting eyes. “Guests don't invite themselves into someone else’s home with the express purpose of liquidating her property from underneath her feet.”
