Chapter 6 - The Encounter at the Coffee Shop

Two weeks after the eviction, I decided to take Skylar out for Saturday morning pastries at our favorite neighborhood café—a quiet, sunlit spot three miles away from the estate.

We were sitting by the window, sharing a plate of fresh blueberry scones, when the glass door of the café chimed.

I looked up and saw Chloe standing near the counter.

She looked a shadow of her former self. Her hair was unstyled, wearing an oversized hoodie and sweatpants, clutching a cheap cardboard coffee cup as if it were a lifeline. She had likely been forced out of her luxury apartment when their joint accounts were frozen by the federal asset forfeiture order.

When Chloe turned and caught sight of me sitting by the window with Skylar, her face twisted into a mask of pure, venomous hatred.

She marched straight across the small café, stopping right beside our table, slamming her coffee cup down with a sharp clatter that made Skylar jump.

“Are you happy now, Charlotte?” Chloe hissed, her voice shaking with rage as nearby patrons turned to stare. “You ruined us! Brandon is sitting in a holding cell waiting for his arraignment, Marcus lost his license, and we’re living out of a budget motel because you couldn't share a fraction of your ridiculous trust fund!”

I didn't flinch. I didn't raise my voice. I slowly set my teacup down, wiped my fingers on a napkin, and looked up at her with absolute calm.

“Chloe, you and your family spent months plotting to steal my home, starve my daughter, and forge my signature to clear your own debts,” I said, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet room. “You didn't lose your wealth. You lost your loot. There is a profound difference.”

Chloe’s face flushed bright red with humiliation and fury. She opened her mouth to scream, but before she could utter another word, the café manager stepped out from behind the counter, flanked by a security guard.

“Ma'am, you’re harassing our customers,” the manager said firmly, stepping between Chloe and our table. “Step outside immediately, or we’ll call the police.”

Chloe glared at me with pure venom, muttered an obscenity under her breath, turned on her heel, and stormed out of the café into the cold morning rain.

Skylar looked up at me, her eyes wide. “Are we safe, Mom?”

“We’ve always been safe, sweetie,” I smiled, reaching out to squeeze her hand. “Eat your scone.”
