Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Spring arrived in Chicago with a brilliant explosion of green shoots, blooming cherry blossoms, and warm, golden sunlight flooding through the newly redesigned windows of our home.

The kitchen renovation—the very project Brandon and Marcus had weaponized as part of their scheme—was finally complete.

Thomas Wright and his team had preserved every historic detail of my father’s original craftsmanship while opening up the space into a modern, light-filled culinary masterpiece. The white quartz countertops gleamed under recessed LED lighting, and the air smelled of fresh coffee and baking bread.

I stood by the kitchen island, watching Skylar do her homework at the custom breakfast bar while chatting happily about her upcoming school science fair.

“Mom, Mr. Wright said I could keep the leftover architectural timber from the trim to build my model bridge for the fair!” Skylar cheered, holding up a handful of polished wood scraps.

“Only if you clean up your workspace when you're done, engineer,” I laughed, setting down a plate of warm cookies between us.

My phone rested peacefully on the counter, entirely silent. No emergency alerts, no frantic texts, no hidden threats lurking in the background.

For the first time in years, the house felt entirely ours.
