Chapter 9 - The Crimson Dawn

A blinding, deafening shockwave ripped through the subterranean vault as the containment column initiated a complete thermal self-destruct sequence.
The liquid light sphere shattered into a million sparkling fragments of energy as the superheated plasma lines flooded the chamber. The metallic-organic tendrils that had begun pouring through the ruptured vault door instantly vaporized into white-hot ash upon contact with the plasma wall.
"You destroyed it!" Marcus screamed, lunging forward, but the concussive force of the blast knocked him back against the console. "You destroyed our only chance at survival!"
"I didn't destroy our chance," Elena shouted over the roaring thunder of the collapsing facility, grabbing Cain by the tactical harness and dragging him toward the waiting VTOL transport. "I bought us a clean slate!"
"Get in! All of you, move!" Cain roared, hauling Marissa and a terrified Viktor into the cargo bay as the floor beneath them began to crack and slide into the abyss.
Unit-7 provided covering fire with its heavy plasma rifle, blasting away falling masonry until the automaton’s internal chassis finally gave out under the extreme heat, its optical eye flickering once before going permanently dark.
"Unit-7!" Elena cried out, reaching back, but Cain pulled her inside the cabin and slammed the armored hatch shut.
Cain vaulted into the pilot seat, slamming the throttles forward to maximum override. The VTOL’s turbines screamed as the aircraft blasted vertically out of the exploding citadel just as the entire island collapsed inward, swallowed by the raging sea and a massive column of superheated steam.
As the transport broke through the storm clouds and soared into the high stratosphere, the first rays of dawn broke across the horizon.
It wasn't the bruised violet of a dying world anymore. It was a brilliant, fierce, uncompromising gold—a true sunrise over a world washed clean of its past.
In the back of the cabin, battered, exhausted, and silent, the survivors stared out the windows at the endless ocean below.
Elena sat in the copilot seat, holding the charred, empty brass casing of the Omega Key in her hand. She knew the dangers weren't gone. The world below was broken, wild, and untamed. But as she looked out at the crimson dawn, she knew one thing for certain:
