Chapter 6 - The Vault of Echoes

The impact had rattled their bones, but miraculously, the hull remained intact.
As Cain forced open the jammed side hatch, a blast of cold, damp air smelling of ozone and ancient salt rushed into the cabin. The storm outside raged with renewed fury, but inside the entrance bay of the submerged citadel, the air was dead, still, and unnervingly quiet.
"Everybody out," Cain ordered, unholstering his assault rifle and sweeping the dimly lit corridor with his tactical flashlight.
Elena stepped out onto the metal grating, the Omega Key in her hand glowing brighter now, casting a steady blue aura against the dark, rusted walls. Unit-7 stepped down behind her, its optical sensor whirring as it scanned the structural integrity of the facility.
"Warning," Unit-7’s metallic voice echoed in the enclosed space. "Biological signatures detected. Non-human. Multiple entities occupying the lower chambers."
Viktor and Marissa stumbled out of the VTOL behind them, shivering in the cold draft. "Where... where are we?" Viktor stammered, looking around in terror at the colossal hydraulic doors and archaic computer terminals that lined the walls. "Is this another one of your father's underground bunkers?"
"No," Elena said softly, her voice carrying a strange, resonant echo. "This is where it all started."
They moved deeper into the citadel, following a wide, descending ramp that led beneath sea level. Massive glass observation windows on either side of the corridor revealed a terrifying subterranean ecosystem: glowing, bioluminescent tendrils—micro-versions of the Swarm—pulsed gently inside giant saline tanks, suspended in stasis.
At the end of the corridor stood a massive circular vault door bearing the exact same geometric insignia as the Omega Key.
Elena stepped up to the central pedestal. Without hesitation, she inserted the brass cylinder into the decryption slot.
*BZZZZT.*
A deep, resonant hum vibrated through the floorboards. The massive vault door slowly split apart, hissing as millions of cubic feet of pressurized air rushed out, revealing a vast, cathedral-like chamber lit entirely by a colossal, floating sphere of pure, liquid light suspended in the center of the room.
And standing beside the light was a figure draped in tattered grey robes, its face hidden beneath a heavy hood.
The figure turned slowly, lowering its hood to reveal a face that made Elena freeze in absolute disbelief.
May you like
It was a face she had buried five years ago.
