Chapter 2 - The Council’s Betrayal

The subterranean Council Chamber of Izola was supposed to be a sanctuary of absolute power, but tonight it smelled of stale sweat, panic, and expensive cigar smoke.
Grand Regent Viktor Sterling paced across the circular mahogany dais, his silk robes rustling with every agitated step. Around him, the remaining five members of the high council muttered anxiously, their eyes darting toward the massive blast doors that led to the outer corridors.
"She has the key," Viktor hissed, slamming his signet ring down onto the obsidian table. "I don't care what military protocols she clings to—Elena Vance is a rogue element. If she interfaces that brass cylinder with the planetary grid mainframe, she will override our automated lockdown protocols and vent the city's emergency oxygen reserves into the upper atmosphere!"
"And if she doesn't interface it, Viktor, we will all suffocate inside this vault while the Swarm digests the outer districts," replied Councilor Marissa Vance—Elena’s estranged aunt—her voice dripping with cold, pragmatic disdain. "Perhaps we should have executed her alongside her father five years ago instead of exiling her to the outer perimeter."
Before Viktor could retort, the heavy steel reinforced doors of the council chamber did not open—they exploded inward in a shower of white-hot sparks and shredded pneumatic bolts.
The acrid smell of ozone flooded the room. Through the swirling cloud of dust and smoke stepped Elena, her trench coat billowing behind her like the wings of a predatory bird. Behind her stood Unit-7, its heavy plasma rifle humming with an angry, blue-white charge.
Viktor stumbled backward, his face draining of all color as he reached instinctively for the panic button embedded in his armrest. "Guard! Guards, terminate the traitor!"
The perimeter security detail stationed inside the chamber raised their carbines, but before they could squeeze the triggers, Unit-7 swept its heavy arm in a wide arc, unleashing a localized electromagnetic pulse that dropped every weapon in the room into the dust with a collective thud.
Elena walked slowly toward the center of the dais, her boots clicking rhythmically against the polished marble floor. She didn't draw a weapon. She didn't need to. The raw, chilling authority in her posture was enough to make the mighty Regents shrink back into their high-backed chairs.
"Save your breath, Viktor," Elena said, her voice cutting through the silence like a razor. "The guards aren't coming. Their comms were routed through my tactical deck ten minutes ago."
"Elena, listen to reason," Marissa intervened, forcing a tight, placating smile as she leaned forward. "You're angry. We understand. But giving you control of the planetary grid is absolute madness. You'll destroy Izola."

"Izola died the day my father was executed for trying to warn you about the Swarm," Elena replied coldly. She stopped two feet from the obsidian table, pulling the brass Omega Key from her pocket and slamming it down onto the glass interface terminal. "Now, I am going to save what's left of it. And you are going to sit quietly and watch."
