Chapter 7 - The Father’s Ghost

Dr. Marcus Vance stood under the glow of the liquid light sphere, his silver hair unkempt, his eyes bright with a manic, brilliant energy that defied his years in isolation.
"Hello, my daughter," Marcus said, his voice raspy but steady, echoing through the cavernous vault. "I see you finally learned how to follow a trail of breadcrumbs."
Elena stood paralyzed, the breath completely knocked from her lungs. "You... you're dead. The Council showed me your body. They said you hung yourself in the high tower."
"The Council is comprised of short-sighted fools who only understand execution by spectacle," Marcus replied with a bitter, humorless chuckle. He stepped forward, his eyes scanning the group behind her until they landed on Viktor and Marissa. A dark, sardonic smile touched his lips. "Ah. And you brought the rats with you. How delightfully poetic."
Viktor staggered forward, clutching his chest. "Marcus? By all that is holy... you engineered all of this? The Swarm, the collapse of Izola, the planetary purge?"
"I didn't engineer the Swarm, Viktor—I woke it," Marcus corrected sharply, his voice rising in intensity. "For centuries, the Architects of Izola knew that our civilization was living on borrowed time. We drained the geothermal core, poisoned the upper stratosphere, and ignored the planet's vital signs. The Swarm is the planet's immune response. And the only way to survive it isn't to hide in a bunker... it's to merge with it."
Marissa recoiled in horror. "You're insane! You want to infect humanity?"
"Not infect—*evolve*," Marcus countered, walking over to the central sphere of liquid light and placing his bare hand against its shimmering surface. As he did, the skin of his right arm rippled, shifting into a translucent, metallic-organic lattice that pulsed in sync with the sphere. "The Omega Key you hold, Elena, isn't an override code for destruction. It's a genetic key. It allows the bearer to command the Swarm instead of fighting it."
Elena looked down at the brass cylinder in her hand, her mind racing. Every instinct screamed at her that her father had crossed a line from savior to monster.
"And if I refuse?" Elena asked quietly, her hand tightening around the key. "What happens to Izola?"

Marcus turned to look at her, his expression softening with a tragic, paternal sorrow. "Then the Swarm finishes its work, my dear. And humanity becomes just another fossil layer in the crust of a dying world."
