Chapter 4 - Escape from the Spire

"Commander Vance! Structural integrity of the observatory level is failing!" Unit-7’s urgent voice crackled over the tactical comm-link as the ceiling above the council chamber cracked open, dropping massive chunks of masonry onto the conference table.
"We need to move, now," Elena ordered, snatching the Omega Key back from the console interface.
Viktor made a desperate lunge toward the doorway, attempting to flee into the private escape tunnels, but Unit-7 intercepted him with a heavy mechanical stride, blocking his path with unyielding steel.
"Where do you think you're going, Regent?" Unit-7 droned flatly. "Your presence is required for atmospheric decompression clearance in the evacuation pods."
"I am the government of this city!" Viktor shrieked, his face red with panic.
"You were," Elena said coldly as she walked past him toward the shattered blast doors. "Come, Viktor. You wanted to see how the core operates. I’m going to give you a front-row seat."
They sprinted through the smoking corridors of the upper spires. The air outside was thick with swirling ash and the deafening roar of the atmospheric shields collapsing in cascading waves of blue static. Down in the streets below, the thermal wall of fire was holding, casting long, dancing shadows against the towering architecture of Izola like a ring of hellfire encircling a doomed kingdom.
As they reached the secondary landing pad, a heavily armored VTOL transport ship sat waiting, its twin rotor-turbines whining at maximum RPM. The pilot's hatch was open, and standing on the loading ramp was a familiar figure clad in tactical desert gear, a scarred face half-hidden beneath a tactical hood.
Cain.
The former head of the Izola resistance movement—and the only man Elena trusted implicitly in this dying world—stepped down and offered her a hand.
"I see you didn't blow yourself up in the mainframe, Vance," Cain said, a grim, weathered smile touching the corner of his mouth as he hauled her aboard. "Though judging by the smoke billowing from the Lower Tiers, you came dangerously close."
"The thermal wall bought us twelve hours, Cain," Elena panted, sliding into the copilot seat and strapping her tactical rig across her chest. "Not a second more. Once the Swarm adapts to the plasma heat, it will tunnel underneath the fire line."
Cain climbed into the pilot seat, his hands flying across the flight controls with practiced ease. "Then it’s a good thing we aren't planning on staying to watch."

Behind them, as the VTOL lifted off the landing pad and tilted its nose toward the dark, storm-tossed ocean beyond the continental shelf, Viktor Sterling slumped into a passenger seat, staring out the reinforced glass at the burning crown jewel of Izola as it slowly vanished into the crimson fog.
