Chapter 3 - The Awakening of the Core

The interface terminal flared to life with a blinding, violent crimson glow as the Omega Key locked into its port. A high-pitched digital shriek echoed through the cavernous chamber as the mainframe recognized the ancestral override code.
*“WARNING: MASTER ADMINISTRATIVE OVERRIDE ACCEPTED. INITIATING CORE PURGE SEQUENCE.”*
The synthesized voice of the city's operating system bounced off the concrete walls. Across the holographic map hovering above the table, millions of pulsing blue lights representing the city’s defense sectors suddenly shifted to a deep, warning amber.
"What have you done?" Viktor gasped, clutching the edge of the console, his eyes wide with absolute horror. "You've initiated the thermal flush! That will vent superheated plasma through every primary conduit in the Lower Tiers! Thousands of people—"
"Thousands of people are already fleeing into the path of the Swarm," Elena interrupted, her eyes locked on the data scrolling across the main screen. "The thermal flush isn't meant to destroy the city, Viktor. It’s meant to create a perimeter wall of fire that will starve the biological plague before it breaches the central generator."
"You're gambling with the entire continental shelf!" Marissa shouted, standing up and pointing an accusing finger at her niece. "If the core destabilizes—"
"If the core destabilizes, we all die instantly instead of being digested alive by a subterranean organism," Elena snapped back, turning to face her aunt with a glare so fierce it made Marissa step back. "I spent five years in the dust and ash of the outer wastes while you sat in this ivory tomb drinking imported wine and pretending the world wasn't ending. Your time of ruling by cowardice is over."
Suddenly, the floor beneath their feet gave a violent, sickening lurch.
A deep, subterranean roar—like the groaning of a tectonic plate splitting open—shook the chamber. Dust cascaded from the vaulted ceiling, and the holographic map flickered violently before stabilizing into a terrifying visual feed from Sector 4.
On the screen, the dark, churning mass of the Swarm—thousands of interlocking, metallic-organic tendrils writhing like black serpents—had reached the outer thermal barrier.

And as the superheated plasma lines ignited along the perimeter streets, the city of Izola let out a collective, mechanical scream.
