Chapter 9 - The Collapse of an Empire

Panic erupted in the ballroom like a bomb going off.

Socialites screamed, dropping their champagne flutes; investors scrambled toward the exits; flashbulbs from lingering press photographers blinded the room in a rapid, chaotic strobe effect.

Vanessa’s face went completely, deathly white—the exact same shade of pale terror I had seen the day she stood beside the swimming pool.

“This is a lie! It’s a setup!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice pitching up into frantic hysteria as the federal agents stepped forward and clicked cold steel handcuffs around her wrists. She spun around, locking her desperate, venomous eyes on me across the room. “Julian! You cowardly bastard! You agreed to the deal! You swore!”

I didn't run. I didn't yell back. I simply walked slowly through the parting crowd until I stood inches away from her.

“I never made a deal with a murderer, Vanessa,” I said quietly, my voice steady and cold. “And unlike you, I don't negotiate with monsters who try to drown little girls.”

She lunged forward, trying to claw at my face, but the federal agents yanked her back firmly, spinning her around and escorting her in a rapid march toward the exit doors as flashbulbs blinded the corridor.

As the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind her, the ballroom fell into a stunned, breathless silence.

I stood alone in the center of the room, looking down at the broken glass of champagne on the floor. The nightmare was over. The empire built on poison and lies had finally crumbled into dust.
