Chapter 5 - The Midnight Threat

I slowly let go of her robe, taking two steps back as if I had just touched a venomous snake.
Vanessa straightened her lapels, smoothing the fabric with immaculate, unhurried precision. She walked past me into the bedroom, stopping by the window to look out at the dark, rain-slicked lawn below.
“So here are our options, Julian,” Vanessa said, her back to me, her voice as calm as a corporate negotiator discussing a quarterly merger. “We keep living our lives. You play the devoted husband, I play the loving mother, and Sophie grows up in a wealthy, secure home with everything a little girl could ever want.”
“And if I refuse?” I asked, my voice shaking with restrained fury. “If I walk out of this house right now with my daughter and go straight to the federal prosecutor?”
Vanessa turned her head slowly, looking at me over her shoulder. Her blue eyes were completely devoid of human warmth.
“If you try to leave, Julian, I won't just ruin you financially,” she whispered, her voice dropping into a lethal register. “I’ll make sure Sophie is taken away by child protective services as the product of an unstable, criminally investigated household. You’ll never see her again. And trust me—I have better lawyers than you can possibly imagine.”
The threat hung in the air between us like poison gas.
She knew my weak point. She knew that Sophie was the only reason I hadn't lost my mind completely after Elena died. She knew she had me checkmated.
“Get out of my sight,” I said quietly, pointing toward the door.
Vanessa didn't argue. She picked up her silk robe, gave me a sickeningly sweet, patronizing smile, and walked out of the master bedroom, closing the door softly behind her.

I stood alone in the dim room, the heavy brass key heavy in my palm, the medical files scattered on the closet floor like breadcrumbs leading straight into hell.
