The Teddy Bear's Secret / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Key on the Patio

The concrete patio was slick with afternoon rain, reflecting the gray, bruised sky above the estate. Water dripped from the wrought-iron furniture, pooling around my sodden shoes as I clutched my trembling six-year-old daughter to my chest. Sophie’s small body shook violently, her tiny fingers locked in the wet fabric of my shirt. She was ice-cold, gasping for air between choked, terrified sobs.

A few feet away, lying on the wet stone beside the edge of the deep swimming pool, sat the soaked, waterlogged remains of an old, tattered teddy bear. Its once-golden plush fur was matted black with water, one of its button eyes hanging loose by a single thread of black cotton.

And right beside it, resting in a puddle of clear pool water, was a small, heavy brass key.

It was an antique piece, dark and tarnished, shaped with a strange, intricate double-bitted head that looked like it belonged to a bank safety deposit box or a hidden compartment in a Victorian desk.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a caged animal. Every instinct in my body screamed, warning me that this single piece of metal held the key to a nightmare I didn't yet understand.

I slowly turned my head away from Sophie, lifting my gaze to the woman standing a few yards away.

Vanessa.

My new wife. The woman who had spent the last two years playing the role of the devoted, loving stepmother to my motherless child. The woman who, just thirty seconds ago, had stood smiling with her hands clasped behind her back while my little girl slipped beneath the surface of the water.

Vanessa’s face had drained of every drop of color. Her carefully applied makeup suddenly looked harsh against her stark, ghostly white skin. Her manicured hands, which had been raised defensively when I first tackled her away from the pool, were now frozen mid-air, trembling slightly.

“Julian,” Vanessa whispered, her voice tight, forced, and entirely unnatural. She swallowed hard, trying to paste back on her usual socialite smile, but her lips quivered uncontrollably. “Julian, thank God you got here. I... I slipped on the wet tile just as I reached the edge. I was trying to grab her, I swear! I froze! Panic just... it paralyzed me!”

“You didn’t reach for her, Vanessa,” I said.

My voice didn't sound like my own. It was flat, hollow, and cold—stripped of every ounce of warmth or affection I had ever felt for her.

Vanessa blinked rapidly, taking a cautious, trembling step backward. Her designer silk blouse was splashed with pool water, clinging to her collarbone. “What are you talking about? You’re in shock! Look at you, you’re soaking wet, let me take Sophie inside—h-get her into a warm bath—”

“Don’t touch us,” I snapped, stepping back and pulling Sophie tighter against my chest.

May you like

I looked down at the brass key lying in the puddle. Then I looked back at Vanessa’s eyes—eyes that were darting wildly toward the French doors of the mansion, calculating escape routes, calculating how much I had seen, calculating how much damage had just been done.
