Chapter 4 - The Confession in the Closet

“You murdered her,” I said. The words came out as a low, dangerous growl, vibrating from the very bottom of my chest. I stepped out of the closet, towering over her in the narrow doorway. “You didn't just lock her away... you poisoned her. Slowly. Over months. So you could steal her estate and step into her life.”
Vanessa didn't flinch. She leaned back slightly against the doorframe, a cold, humorless smile touching the corners of her lips.
“Murder is such an ugly, pedestrian word, Julian,” Vanessa said smoothly, her voice eerily quiet so as not to wake Sophie in the next room. “I preferred to call it... administration. Elena was weak. She was drowning in her own grief over her mother’s death, and she couldn't handle the responsibilities of the estate. I simply took the burden off her shoulders.”
“She was my wife!” I roared, lunging forward and grabbing her by the lapels of her silk robe, slamming her back against the wall with enough force to rattle the pictures in the hallway.
Vanessa’s eyes didn't widen with fear; they flashed with a dark, triumphant amusement. She reached up, her cool fingers resting lightly against my wrists, pressing down with surprising strength.
“And I gave you a family when you were falling apart, Julian,” she whispered, her voice dropping into a venomous hiss. “I gave you a mother for your daughter. I kept your life running like clockwork while you sat in your ivory tower playing CEO. And now you’re going to kill me? Go ahead. Call the police. Tell them your dead wife’s step-sister kept medical files in a hidden wall safe. See how long it takes for the investigators to look into your own financial accounts—accounts that mysteriously doubled the week after Elena’s probate cleared.”
I froze.
The blood rushed in my ears. I stared at her, my hands loosening their grip on her robe. “What... what are you talking about?”
“Oh, darling,” Vanessa laughed softly, a sound like broken glass. “Did you really think you were completely innocent in all of this? Your signature was on the secondary asset transfer forms. You signed off on her estate liquidation while you were grieving. Legally, you’re my co-conspirator whether you remember signing the papers or not.”
The trap snapped shut in my mind with terrifying clarity.
She hadn't just framed herself; she had carefully, meticulously engineered my life so that if she went down, she would drag me, my company, and my entire reputation straight down into the abyss with her.

And little Sophie? Sophie had found the teddy bear because Elena had hidden that key inside the toy’s stuffing three years ago, right before Vanessa took her away to that institute—knowing that if anything ever happened to her, her daughter would one day find the truth.
