Chapter 4 - The Rebellion of the Riders

Dawn broke over Highmorne, painting the jagged mountain peaks in brilliant shades of gold, amber, and blood-red. It was the morning of the Great Bonding Ceremony.
Thousands of citizens, elite nobles, and armored dragon-riders had gathered in the massive outdoor amphitheater carved into the side of the central crater. At the grand dais stood the High Prelate in his flowing white and gold robes, flanked by empty golden cages meant for the newly bonded beasts.
"Today," the High Prelate’s amplified voice boomed across the roaring wind, "we purge the corruption of the past and usher in a new era of absolute dominion under the guidance of our loyal commanders!"
Suddenly, the heavy bronze gates at the back of the amphitheater groaned open.
A collective gasp rippled through the assembled thousands. Striding into the center of the arena wasn't a disgraced prisoner in chains, but Lyra Vance, wearing her old silver-trimmed vanguard armor, walking with absolute, unyielding authority.
And perched regally upon her shoulder, its obsidian scales catching the morning sun with a dazzling, prismatic shimmer, was Vesper.
"Seize her!" the High Prelate screeched, pointing a trembling finger. "That woman is an outlaw! She harbors a demonic beast!"
Before the guards could move, Lyra raised her hand, holding high the heavy leather ledger.
"Citizens of Highmorne!" Lyra’s voice carried effortlessly across the stone bowl, amplified by the resonant acoustics of the crater. "For years, the High Council has lied to you. They have branded the innocent as traitors, hoarded the kingdom's resources, and plotted a military coup to overthrow the crown! Here, in this ledger, are the confessions, the bank records, and the execution orders signed by Malakor and the Prelate himself!"
Murmurs of shock and outrage erupted through the crowd. Several senior dragon-riders stepped forward, their faces darkening as they recognized the seals on the distributed parchment copies Vesper had used his shadow-magic to scatter across the bleachers.
"It's a forgery!" the Prelate panicked, backing away. "Kill her! Kill them both!"
Dozens of elite guard-wyverns descended from the upper ledges, their jaws snapping open to unleash torrents of fire.
Vesper leaped from Lyra’s shoulder, expanding mid-air into a magnificent, thirty-foot beast of pure shadow and starlight. With a deafening roar that shook the very foundations of the mountain, Vesper unleashed a massive, sweeping wave of starlight energy that neutralized every stream of fire in an instant, pushing the attacking wyverns back into submission without causing a single lethal strike.
Seeing the truth exposed and their leaders cornered, the honest dragon-riders in the audience drew their weapons—not against Lyra, but against the corrupt guards.
"Arrest the High Prelate!" shouted the veteran captain of the royal guard, stepping into the arena with his sword drawn.

Within minutes, the Council's grip on Highmorne shattered completely as the guards laid down their arms, realizing their tyranny had finally reached its end.
