The Secret Heir of Highmorn / Chapter 3 / 5

Chapter 3 - The Descent into the Sunken Vaults

Escaping the upper levels of Highmorne required navigating the treacherous, trap-laden Sunken Vaults—an ancient labyrinth beneath the nursery where the Council stored its darkest secrets, forbidden artifacts, and stolen political ledgers. Guided by Vesper’s uncanny ability to sense magical wards and dissolve physical barriers with his shadow-breath, Lyra slipped through the subterranean corridors like a ghost.

The air here was damp, smelling of ancient dust and forgotten gold. Torchlight flickered along damp stone walls carved with bas-reliefs depicting the ancient cataclysm that had shaped Telan'Shaara.

As they approached the central vault door—a massive circular slab of enchanted granite covered in interlocking runic rings—a sharp sound echoed from the dark corridor behind them.

"Going somewhere, little bird?"

Lyra froze. Stepping out from the shadows of the arched doorway was Lord Commander Malakor himself, flanked by a dozen armored guards with drawn crossbows. A cruel, triumphant grin twisted his scarred face.

"I always knew you were a stubborn pest, Lyra," Malakor sneered, resting his hand casually on the pommel of a massive, rune-etched broadsword. "Stealing a defective hatchling and harboring it in the sanctuary. Did you really think you could outsmart the Council? The vaults are sealed. There is no escape."

Lyra stood her ground, her fingers resting gently on Vesper’s spiked collar. "You didn't want the dragon destroyed because it was defective, Malakor. You wanted it because your own bloodline magic failed to bond with a royal wyrm, and you needed a void-beast to anchor your coup against the High Prelate."

Malakor’s smile vanished, replaced by a dark, murderous glare. "Clever girl. Too bad intelligence doesn't stop crossbow bolts. Fire!"

"Vesper, now!" Lyra shouted.

Before the bolts could leave the bows, Vesper unleashed a massive shockwave of pure kinetic shadow. The blast slammed into the front ranks of the guards, sending their weapons flying and shattering their shields into splinters.

Malakor roared in fury, drawing his broadsword and charging forward with terrifying speed, channeling raw lightning magic through the blade. "I'll carve you both into pieces!"

Instead of running, Vesper lunged forward to meet the warlord head-on. The dragon moved like a streak of midnight lightning, dodging Malakor’s wide, ferocious swings with acrobatic grace. With a powerful swipe of his tail, Vesper knocked the broadsword from the commander's hands, sending it clattering across the stone floor.

Malakor stumbled back, his eyes widening in sheer terror as Vesper pinned him to the floor with a heavy, clawed foot, the dragon's jaws hovering inches from the commander's throat.

"Wait... wait!" Malakor choked out, sweating profusely. "You can't kill me! I hold the ledger! I hold the proof that the Council framed you!"

Lyra walked slowly over, picking up the heavy leather-bound ledger that had fallen from Malakor’s belt during the scuffle. She flipped it open under the dim torchlight, her eyes scanning the incriminating signatures, financial transfers, and assassination orders signed by Malakor and the High Prelate himself.

"I don't need to kill you, Malakor," Lyra said coldly, slipping the ledger into her pack. "I just need the entire kingdom to see what you really are."
