Chapter 2 - The Hatchling with the Void in His Eyes

The creature that tumbled out of the broken shell was unlike any dragon ever recorded in the ancient codexes of Telan'Shaara. No larger than a hunting hound, its scales shimmered not with the fiery crimson or emerald green of the royal broods, but with a deep, abyssal void-black that seemed to swallow the torchlight around it. Along its spine ran razor-sharp crystalline ridges that hummed with a strange, harmonic resonance, and its small wings fluttered with the silent grace of a shadow cutting through moonlight.
It didn't roar as newborn dragons typically did. Instead, it let out a soft, melodic purr, scrambling clumsily across the stone slab until its wet snout pressed against Lyra’s cheek.
"Well, aren't you a terrifying little secret," Lyra whispered, a genuine smile breaking across her tired face as she wrapped the shivering creature in a warm wool blanket. She named him Vesper, sensing the deep, slumbering power humming beneath his dark hide.
Over the next three weeks, Vesper grew at an impossible rate, fueled by the volcanic minerals Lyra smuggled from the central core. But his growth wasn't just physical; it was magical. Vesper possessed a rare, forbidden ability—he could manipulate the ambient shadows, rendering himself and Lyra completely invisible to the patrolling guards, and absorb the thermal energy of incoming attacks, neutralizing any threat before it could strike.
Word of a strange, anomalous energy signature emanating from the lower nursery, however, had not escaped the notice of the High Council.
Late one freezing night, while the howling winds shook the mountain spires, the screech of iron hinges signaled an unannounced raid. Lyra was at her workbench examining a star-chart when the door blew inward. Three elite inquisitors of the Council, clad in heavy rune-inscribed plate armor and wielding crackling lightning-pikes, stormed the alcove.
"By order of the High Council," the lead inquisitor barked, his voice echoing menacingly. "Step away from the beast, Lyra Vance. The creature is an abomination, a breach of sacred blood purity laws. Seize it for immediate dissection!"
Lyra instinctively stepped in front of Vesper’s bedding, her hand gripping a heavy iron fire-poker. "You won't touch him!"
"Traitor!" the inquisitor snarled, raising his lightning-pike. A bolt of jagged, blue electrical energy hissed through the air, aimed directly at Lyra’s chest.
Before Lyra could even blink, a dark, liquid shadow erupted from behind her.
Vesper leaped forward with terrifying speed. The infant dragon opened his jaws, and instead of fire, a brilliant pulse of concentrated starlight mixed with absolute void-energy blasted outward. The lightning bolt was instantly swallowed into the darkness, and the shockwave sent all three elite inquisitors flying backward across the room, crashing heavily against the stone wall before losing consciousness.
The nursery fell into a stunned, breathless silence. Vesper landed lightly on his paws beside Lyra, his violet eyes glowing fiercely, a low, rumbling growl vibrating in his chest.

"They know we're here now," Lyra said, her voice dropping into a steely resolve as she looked down at the dragon. "We can't hide in Highmorne anymore. If we want to survive, we have to take the fight straight to the Council."
