Chapter 1 - The Ash-Stained Cradle of Highmorne

Highmorne hung suspended between jagged, frost-bitten peaks like a forgotten kingdom carved directly from the bone of the world. Here, where the air was thin enough to freeze human lungs and the wind shrieked through frozen canyons with the voice of ancient ghosts, lay the Dragon Nursery—the most sacred and heavily guarded sanctuary in all of Telan'Shaara. Massive obsidian arches framed the great volcanic nests, glowing with the residual heat of subterranean magma and echoing with the heavy, rhythmic breathing of hundreds of dormant leviathans.
Lyra Vance stood in the shadows of the central hatchery, her fingers trembling slightly as she adjusted the heavy fur-lined straps of her leather harness. Once a master architect of the royal dragon-rider vanguard, she had been reduced to an indentured caretaker, branded a traitor to her order after refusing to forge weapon registries for the corrupted High Council. Her life was now measured in crushed limestone, foul-smelling sulfur, and the constant threat of incineration by overprotective dragon mothers.
Yet, amidst the oppressive heat and the looming political terror, Lyra found solace in the quietest corner of the nursery: the obsidian basin cradling a single, neglected egg.
It was smaller than the rest, its shell etched with faint silver veins that pulsed with an irregular, feeble light. The High Council had deemed it a "dead clutch," a genetic aberration doomed to hatch stillborn, and had ordered it cast into the magma pit to make room for royal bloodline clutches. Lyra had risked her life—and what little remained of her freedom—to smuggle it into her private sleeping alcove beneath the rock ledges.
"Just hold on a little longer, little one," Lyra whispered softly, pressing her palm against the warm, vibrating shell as a soft cracking sound echoed through the stone room.
Suddenly, the heavy iron-reinforced iron doors of the nursery rattled violently. Heavy, measured footsteps echoed across the volcanic stone floor, followed by the clanking of ceremonial gold-plated armor.
Lyra’s heart leaped into her throat. She pulled a thick woolen cloak over the basin just as Lord Commander Malakor—a ruthless, ambitious tyrant who had orchestrated her downfall—stepped into the torchlight. His cold, predatory eyes swept across the room, lingering on Lyra with undisguised contempt.
"Still playing nursemaid to trash, Vance?" Malakor sneered, stepping closer, his heavy steel boots crunching against the gravel. "The Council’s patience wears thin. Tomorrow is the Great Bonding Ceremony. The Arch-Prelate requires every functional cradle filled with pure-blood wyrmlings. If that runt in your alcove doesn't hatch by dawn, I’ll feed it to the hounds myself—and you along with it."
Without waiting for a reply, Malakor turned on his heel, his dark cape billowing behind him as he retreated into the shadows.

Left alone, Lyra exhaled a shaky breath. She pulled the cloak away from the basin. The silver veins on the egg were now glowing with blinding intensity. With a sharp, crystalline snap, the shell splintered wide open, and a pair of luminous, violet eyes stared up into hers.
