Chapter 6 - The Shadow of the Syndicate

The federal indictment hit the Chicago papers like a seismic tremor, stripping Adrian Mercer of his invincible aura within twenty-four hours. Inside the high-security visitors' booth of the Metropolitan Correctional Center, the fluorescent lights hummed with a sterile, maddening buzz. Adrian sat on the bolted metal stool, his tailored black suit replaced by a coarse orange jumpsuit that hung loosely over his broad shoulders. His dark hair was uncombed, and the ruthless, calculating spark that had once defined Chicago's underworld was replaced by a cold, simmering fury.

Enzo sat across the reinforced glass divider, holding the black plastic phone tightly against his ear. His knuckles were bruised, the raw consequence of trying to hold together an empire that was actively cannibalizing itself from the inside out.

"The board members are cutting ties, Boss," Enzo said, his voice low and rushed. "Every shell company in the Caymans has been frozen by federal magistrates. The D.A. has our communication logs, our dock schedules, and the payroll records for every judge on the payroll. We're bleeding out."

Adrian didn't blink. His eyes, cold as winter ice, fixed on the smudged glass separating them. "What about the assets outside Hartwell Freight? The real estate holdings in Wisconsin? The offshore accounts in Zurich?"

Enzo swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing. "Gone, Adrian. Every single one. Caroline didn't just lock us out of the corporate treasury; she executed a global asset freeze through an international maritime trust. She anticipated every move we made three steps ahead. The federal task force didn't even need our servers—she handed them a fully indexed, cryptographically signed audit trail."

A muscle ticked violently along Adrian’s jawline. He had spent a decade building a labyrinth of crime, corruption, and absolute dominance, believing himself to be the ultimate predator. Yet, the woman he had underestimated, gaslit, and treated as a decorative fixture had dismantled his life's work with the clinical precision of a surgeon.

"Find her," Adrian whispered, his voice a low, gravelly threat that vibrated through the audio receiver. "Track her down. A pregnant woman—now with a newborn—cannot simply vanish off the face of the earth without a digital footprint. Someone helped her."

"We tried, Adrian," Enzo replied grimly, shaking his head. "Her burner accounts were routed through decentralized proxy servers in Iceland. The legal team says even if you get bail—which you won't—there's nothing left to reclaim. She owns the logistics, she owns the shipping patents, and she owns the legal title to every square foot of Mercer Logistics' former holdings. You're completely legally boxed in."

Adrian slowly hung up the receiver, his reflection staring back at him in the thick, bulletproof glass. For the first time in his life, the mafia kingpin realized he wasn't pulling the strings anymore. He was just another ghost trapped inside a cage of his own making.
