Chapter 13 - The Unraveling Syndicate

Down in the city’s industrial district, far away from the gleaming glass towers of the harbor, what remained of Adrian Mercer’s former syndicate was tearing itself apart. In the back room of a dimly lit auto-repair shop that served as a makeshift hideout, Enzo slammed his fist against a grease-stained table, glaring at the two remaining mid-level lieutenants standing before him.

"What do you mean the docks are locked?" Enzo hissed, his face twisted in frustration. "We used to run those containers blindfolded!"

"We did, Enzo, when Adrian was running the show," snapped Sal, his broken nose twitching under the harsh fluorescent light. "Things have changed. Hartwell Freight's new security system uses biometric clearance and automated federal data-sharing protocols. If one of our trucks even slows down near a restricted gate, port authority and the feds descend on us in three minutes flat. We’re locked out for good."

The room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. The absolute power they had once wielded across Chicago's underworld had evaporated overnight, choked out by Caroline’s clinical, systematic dismantling of their financial lifelines. They weren't criminal masterminds anymore; they were hunted relics of a dead era, hiding in the shadows while a woman they had underestimated built an empire above them.

"Adrian's doing twenty-five years with no parole," Enzo muttered, dropping his head into his hands. "And the woman he tried to cage now owns the entire city's shipping infrastructure. We lost before we even realized we were playing her game."
