Chapter 19 - The Crumbling Relics

Far from the gleaming glass towers of downtown Chicago, in a desolate industrial alleyway on the city’s industrial outskirts, the remnants of the old underworld were gasping their final breaths. Inside a cramped, damp basement office illuminated only by a flickering neon sign from the street above, Sal sat at a metal folding table littered with empty takeout containers and cheap bourbon bottles.

The door creaked open, and Enzo walked in, brushing wet snow off his worn leather jacket. He looked older, his hair graying at the temples, his posture weighed down by the relentless pressure of living as a hunted ghost in a city that no longer belonged to them.

"Did you reach the contact?" Sal asked, his voice rough and anxious.

Enzo slammed a battered briefcase onto the table and dropped into a folding chair. "There are no contacts left, Sal. Everyone who used to take our calls is either sitting in a federal penitentiary or running scared. The private investigator we hired to dig up dirt on Caroline Mercer just backed out."

Sal stared at him in disbelief, slamming his hand against the table. "Backed out? Why? We paid him good money!"

"Because there's no dirt to find!" Enzo snapped, his voice rising in sudden, frustrated desperation. "Hartwell Freight is cleaner than a whistle. The federal auditors cleared them of every single fabricated allegation from five years ago. Caroline didn't just survive Adrian's takedown—she completely rewrote the corporate landscape. She owns the port authorities, the shipping contracts, and the maritime unions. We aren't fighting a rival syndicate, Sal. We're trying to punch through a titanium vault with a plastic spoon."

The mention of Adrian Mercer hung heavily in the damp air between them. The once-feared mafia kingpin was currently spending his sixth year behind maximum-security bars, completely irrelevant to the city he once terrorized. His empire had been dismantled, his wealth seized, and his legacy erased by the very woman he had tried to silence.

"What do we do now?" Sal asked quietly, his bravado entirely gone, leaving behind the hollow reality of men who had bet on the wrong side of history.

"We disappear," Enzo said, staring blankly at the gray concrete floor. "We pack our bags, leave Chicago, and pray that Caroline Mercer is too busy running an empire to remember we even exist."
