Chapter 24 - The Final Echo

Deep within the gray, sterile walls of the maximum-security federal penitentiary, the night shift was quiet, broken only by the distant, metallic clank of automated security doors. Adrian Mercer sat on the edge of his narrow metal cot in solitary confinement, staring blankly at the concrete floor.

The guards didn't talk to him; the other inmates knew better than to approach him. He was a ghost of a man, stripped of his wealth, his influence, and his freedom. His legal team had long since stopped answering his letters, and the name Mercer Logistics was nothing more than a faded footnote in federal court archives.

A guard walked past his cell, pausing briefly to shine a harsh flashlight beam across the metal bars. "Lights out, Mercer."

Adrian didn't move. He slowly raised his head, his eyes bloodshot and hollow, catching his own faint reflection in the tiny, wired glass window of the cell door. He remembered the night Caroline had walked out of his Michigan study—how calm she had been, how terrifyingly certain of herself. He had laughed it off as the reaction of a trapped, dependent wife.

Only now did he realize the cosmic irony of his arrogance. He had spent his entire life believing he was the master strategist controlling every piece on the board, only to realize too late that he was merely a pawn in a game played by a woman whose intellect and strength he was entirely too blind to see.

He closed his eyes against the harsh glare of the flashlight, enveloped by the absolute silence of the concrete cage he had ultimately built for himself.
