Chapter 9 - A New Foundation

That evening, after both kids were tucked safely into their beds, reading bedtime stories under the glow of a warm nightlight, I sat at my home office desk.

The laptop screen was open, displaying the encrypted backup server dashboard.

I scrolled through the archive—not to look at the footage of betrayal, but to verify the integrity of the new security parameters I had installed. Motion sensors active. Audio buffers cleared. Cloud synchronization encrypted with military-grade zero-knowledge keys.

My phone buzzed on the desk. An email from the state attorney general’s office.

*Subject: Commendation and Case Closure — Operation Oakridge.*

*Daniel, thank you for your exemplary assistance in uncovering and neutralizing an interstate financial fraud and corporate embezzlement ring. Your forensic diligence has been formally entered into state investigative training modules.*

I smiled faintly, closing the email tab.

May you like

I hadn't done it for training modules. I had done it because when a father hears his seven-year-old daughter whispering through tears that her back hurts from carrying a baby she was forced to protect, every rule of polite society evaporates.
