Chapter 8 - The Aftermath of the Storm

A week later, the first autumn leaves began to drift lazily across the emerald lawn of our front yard, painting the pavement in shades of copper and gold.

The legal battles were moving forward without requiring my constant presence; Sarah and Detective Miller were handling the state evidentiary depositions, while my family law attorney finalized the uncontested divorce proceedings based on abandonment and financial fraud.

Claire had tried calling me twice from the county jail holding facility, her voice broken, begging for forgiveness, claiming that Marcus Vale had manipulated her into the scheme.

I hadn't answered either call.

I didn't need to hear apologies delivered only after getting caught. The only voice that mattered was the one currently chattering away in the kitchen as Lily helped me set the table for dinner.

“Daddy, do you think Noah likes macaroni and cheese?” Lily asked seriously, holding a plastic spoon in the air.

“Considering he only eats formula and baby puree right now, I’m going to guess no, bug,” I laughed, walking over and gently tapping the tip of her nose with a napkin. “But give him a few years, and he’ll probably eat the whole pot.”

May you like

Lily giggled, a bright, unburdened sound that washed away the last lingering shadows of the past.
