Chapter 3 - The Midday Meeting at the Grandview

While Sarah monitored the wire trap from the state office, I drove downtown toward the Grandview Hotel.
It was time for phase two of the plan.
I parked two blocks away, adjusted my sunglasses and baseball cap, and walked into the opulent marble lobby of the luxury hotel. I didn't go to the front desk; instead, I walked straight to the executive lounge elevators. As a frequent traveler for state cyber-security audits, I knew how hotel security networks operated. With my credentials and a portable MAC-spoofing dongle I kept in my laptop bag, tapping into the hotel’s guest Wi-Fi router logs took less than three minutes.
Sitting on a velvet couch in the mezzanine, I opened my laptop.
The logs confirmed it. Room 1402. Registered to Marcus Vale.
A few keystrokes later, I had bypassed the room’s smart-TV gateway and accessed the internal intercom-camera feed—a digital oversight left by technicians who integrated cheap smart devices into luxury suites.
The screen flickered alive.
Claire was sitting at the glass dining table inside Suite 1402, wearing a silk bathrobe, sipping mimosas with Marcus Vale.
“The transfer should clear by 2:00 PM,” Marcus was saying, laughing as he sliced a piece of smoked salmon. “Once the funds hit the Cayman account, Daniel won't even be able to subpoena them without running into international banking blocks.”
“And if he checks the house?” Claire asked, swirling her champagne glass. “My mother said she left the door unlocked so it looks like we were just out shopping, but what if he came back early from the conference?”
Marcus scoffed, waving a hand dismissively. “Relax, Claire. Your husband is a workaholic drone. He probably hasn't even looked at his phone since yesterday afternoon. Besides, even if he finds out, what can he do? We’re legally married, and the pre-nup has a loophole regarding joint investment liquidation. By tomorrow, we’ll be boarding a flight to Zurich.”
I watched the screen, my expression completely motionless. My heart didn't race; my hands didn't shake. Every word they spoke was being recorded, timestamped, and mirrored directly to the state attorney general’s secure evidentiary archive.

“Enjoy your mimosas, Marcus,” I whispered to the empty room around me, closing the laptop lid. “It’s going to be a very expensive flight.”
