Chapter 7 - The Arrest of Marcus Vale

While Lily and Noah played in the living room with their toys, my phone buzzed with an urgent text from Detective Miller.
*“Vale just tried to board a private charter flight at the municipal airfield. Federal marshals picked him up on the tarmac. He’s currently in holding at the federal district courthouse. Your wife is cooperating with prosecutors trying to secure a reduced plea deal, but she’s still facing up to ten years for conspiracy and fraud.”*
I stared at the screen, feeling a strange sense of hollow closure.
There was no joy in watching someone you once loved destroy themselves out of sheer greed and entitlement. There was only the quiet satisfaction of knowing that justice, cold and methodical, had done its work.
I walked over to the home security control panel on the wall.
The system was fully active now, its indicator lights glowing a steady, reassuring green. No hidden passwords, no backdoor loopholes, no secrets whispered in the dark.
I opened the log viewer. The encrypted backup server was humming smoothly, recording every frame, every second, every heartbeat of the home we had reclaimed.
My phone rang again. It was my attorney, confirming that the emergency temporary custody order had been converted into a permanent sole custody decree by family court judge Arthur Sterling, who noted in his written opinion that “the petitioner’s meticulous preservation of digital evidence saved his children from prolonged endangerment and protected them from irredeemable financial and emotional devastation.”

I set the phone down on the kitchen island and walked over to the living room window.
