Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Chalice and the Ultimate Sacrifice

Though Vespera was locked away in the deepest dungeons, her poisonous web had already been spun.

Three days after Amber’s recovery began, the little girl suddenly convulsed in her sleep, her breathing turning to frantic, rattling gasps. The royal physicians rushed into the chamber, their faces turning the color of ash as they tested the half-empty bowl of herbal broth sitting on the bedside table.

"Poison!" shouted the head physician, dropping the bowl. "A rare, paralytic neurotoxin harvested from the deep volcanic trenches! It binds directly to dragon-scale biology and neutralizes magical regeneration!"

Lyra screamed, collapsing beside the bed and taking Amber’s ice-cold hand in hers. "Save her! Please, do something!"

Kaelen walked into the room, his face an absolute mask of terrifying, silent rage. He didn't yell. He didn't smash furniture. But the sheer destructive pressure of his dragon aura caused the stone walls of the citadel to tremble. He knew instantly who was responsible. Vespera had left a loyalist sleeper agent within the royal kitchens.

The physician bowed low, trembling uncontrollably. "My King... the toxin is too advanced. It has reached her heart. Only one thing in this realm can neutralize it."

"Name it," Kaelen commanded instantly.

"The Dragon King’s Heart-Flame," the physician whispered fearfully. "A direct extraction of your immortal life-force infused into her bloodstream. But... doing so will drain half your immortality, leaving you vulnerable to mortal wounds, and if your concentration slips by even a fraction of a second during the ritual, the backlash will incinerate you both."

Without a single second of hesitation, Kaelen unbuttoned his regal tunic, baring his broad chest. He pulled an ancient, razor-sharp obsidian dagger from the altar table.

"Kaelen, no!" Lyra cried out, grabbing his arm. "If you fail, you'll die! Amber is my daughter, but I won't let you throw your life away!"

Kaelen looked down at Lyra, placing his warm hand over hers, his eyes softening with a depth of unconditional love that he had never shown another living soul.

"I spent five years living in a hell of my own making, Lyra," Kaelen murmured softly, pressing his forehead against hers. "I will not spend another second without the two women who are my soul. If my life buys hers, it is the only worthwhile thing this king has ever done."

Kaelen drove the obsidian blade deep into his own chest, carving open a glowing seal right over his pounding heart. A blinding beam of molten gold and white fire erupted from his wound, suspended in the air by sheer willpower. With a sweeping motion of his hand, Kaelen directed the roaring torrent of divine life-force straight into little Amber’s chest.

For thirty agonizing seconds, the room was bathed in an inferno of blinding light. Lyra screamed, shielding her eyes as the shockwaves rattled the citadel walls.

Then, absolute silence.

Kaelen collapsed heavily onto his knees, blood pouring from his chest, his skin pale and clammy.

On the bed, Amber let out a deep, clear breath. Her eyes fluttered open, her cheeks flushed with healthy, rosy warmth, and the feverish glow on her little obsidian horns vanished, replaced by a smooth, healthy sheen.

"Mommy...?" Amber whispered sleepily, looking around the room.

Lyra burst into tears of overwhelming relief, scooping her daughter into her arms and burying her face in her curls. Then, she turned her tear-stained eyes toward Kaelen, who was slowly losing consciousness on the stone floor.
