Chapter 3 - The Blood Tie Revealed and the Viper’s Venom

The private royal infirmary smelled of burning sage, crushed ginseng, and ancient magic.
King Kaelen sat rigidly in a high-backed leather chair beside the medical cot, staring unblinkingly at the pale, sleeping child resting beneath the silk blankets. The royal physicians had just completed the diagnostic scan, and the results had left the mighty king utterly speechless.
A drop of Amber’s blood had reacted to the royal ancestral chalice, turning the liquid into brilliant, molten gold.
She was his. His flesh and blood. The secret heir he never knew existed.
The heavy oak doors creaked open, and Lyra stepped out from the adjoining recovery room. She looked paler than she had five years ago, her clothes worn, her eyes shadowed by endless nights of fear and grueling labor. Yet, as she stood before the man who had broken her heart, her posture was unyielding, burning with fierce maternal defiance.
"Is she going to live?" Lyra demanded, her voice cutting sharply through the suffocating silence of the room.
Kaelen slowly stood up. At six-foot-four, he towered over her, his silver-gold eyes swirling with a turbulent mixture of overwhelming guilt, fury, and a terrifying, awakening hunger. He closed the distance between them in two massive strides, his large, calloused hand reaching out as if to touch her cheek, before stopping himself mid-air and clenching his fist.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Kaelen’s voice was a low, dangerous rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. "You carried my child into the wasteland. You let her suffer. You kept her from me."
"Tell you?" Lyra let out a bitter, humorless laugh, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Tell the man who threw me off a balcony like a piece of trash because a crooked priest read a fake prophecy? Tell the king who valued his paranoid throne over an innocent life? If I had told you I was pregnant, Valerius and Vespera would have murdered her before she drew her first breath!"
Kaelen flinched as if struck by a physical blow. The memory of that snowy morning—the blind arrogance that had driven him to cast her out—hit him with the force of an avalanche.
Before Kaelen could answer, the doors burst open again. Lady Vespera glided into the room, her emerald silk gown rustling, a sickeningly sweet smile plastered across her painted lips.
"My King," Vespera purred, gliding right past Lyra as if she were invisible. "The high council is in an uproar. Word has leaked that a common human street-waif has smuggled a bastard child into the royal quarters, claiming royal blood. We cannot let this fraud taint the dynastic line. Surely you aren't going to let this little monster threaten the stability of the realm?"
Kaelen’s head snapped toward Vespera. The silver-gold fire in his eyes flared so intensely that the glass windows across the room cracked from the thermal pressure.
"Guard," Kaelen whispered, his voice dropping into a lethal, glacial register. "Escort Lady Vespera to the dungeon towers. Permanently. Anyone who questions my daughter’s bloodline answers directly to my blade."
Vespera’s face drained of color, her jaw dropping in sheer horror as two royal enforcers grabbed her arms and dragged her screaming from the room.

Kaelen turned back to Lyra, his chest heaving. He reached out, his fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead. "You were right to run, Lyra. I was a monster. But I swear to you on the ancient gods... I will spend the rest of my immortal life burning down anyone who ever tries to hurt my family again."
