Chapter 2 - The Return of the Desperate Mother and the Frozen King

Five years later, the borderlands of the Obsidian Kingdom were a harsh, unforgiving wasteland of ash and ice. In a secluded forest cottage miles away from the capital, Lyra Vance stared down at her five-year-old daughter, Amber, with a heart gripped by icy terror.
Amber was a brilliant, energetic little girl with hair as dark as midnight, but beneath her mop of curls rested two tiny, shimmering obsidian horns—the undeniable mark of her royal dragon bloodline. And right now, those horns were burning with a feverish, unnatural heat.
The half-dragon curse was taking its toll. Without the pure draconian thermal energy of her royal father to stabilize her fluctuating core, Amber’s human half was failing. Her little body seized, her breathing turned shallow, and the local village apothecary had shaken his head in sorrow, whispering that the child wouldn't survive another full moon.
Lyra packed a single bag, wrapped Amber in a thick woolen blanket, and made the most terrifying decision of her life. She was going back to the North Citadel. She would swallow her pride, beg at the iron gates, and offer her own soul if it meant securing a royal healer for her dying child.
When Lyra reached the gates of the capital, the city had transformed. Statues of Kaelen loomed over the grand plazas, and the guards wore heavy steel armor bearing the royal dragon crest. But the atmosphere inside the citadel was tense.
As Lyra pushed her way through the bustling market square, desperately searching for the apothecary district, a sharp, familiar spike of ambient heat made the air ripple.
High above, riding atop a magnificent armored frost-drake, was King Kaelen Vane himself, flanked by his royal guard and the ever-loathman Lady Vespera. Kaelen looked older, harder, his jawline carved from granite, an aura of eternal melancholy clinging to his broad shoulders. Rumors across the realm said the Dragon King had never taken a queen, haunted by a ghost he had cast out five years ago.
Suddenly, Amber’s fever spiked violently. The little girl let out a piercing cry, her tiny hands glowing with wild, uncontrolled dragon-fire that scorched the cobblestones beneath their feet.
The crowd shrieked in panic, scattering in all directions. Guards drew their glowing broadswords, rushing toward the alleyway where Lyra knelt shielding her daughter.
" Halt! By order of the King!" shouted the captain of the guard, lowering a massive spear right toward Lyra’s back.
Before the blade could descend, a shockwave of absolute, terrifying power ripped through the square. The temperature plummeted forty degrees in a split second. The guards froze instantly, dropping to their knees as a towering, majestic figure materialized out of thin air right before them.

Kaelen Vane stepped forward, his eyes scanning the smoking cobblestones. But when his gaze locked onto the kneeling woman in the tattered cloak—and the small, trembling child with glowing obsidian horns clutched tightly in her arms—the breath completely caught in the Dragon King's throat.
