Chapter 1 - The Forbidden Night and the Cruel Exile

The smoldering embers of the Obsidian Hearth cast long, dancing shadows across the cavernous bedchamber of the Dragon King. Outside the towering crystal windows of the North Citadel, a freezing blizzard howled against the mountains, but inside, the air was thick with feverish heat, heavy breathing, and skin burning against skin.
Lyra Vance lay gasping, her fingers tangled in the raven-dark hair of King Kaelen Vane. Kaelen—the undisputed ruler of the draconian realms, a monarch whose very blood burned with ancient fire and whose word could level mountains—was completely unraveled. For three centuries, Kaelen had ruled with cold, unyielding detachment, untouched by mortal emotion. Yet, on this stormy night, when Lyra had accidentally stumbled through the hidden mountain pass fleeing a pack of frost-wolves, the king had looked into her defiant emerald eyes and lost his mind to an insatiable, wild hunger.
Their union was explosive, a clash of mortal fragility and immortal fury. Hours later, as the first rays of pale winter dawn broke over the frost-tipped peaks, Lyra woke up wrapped in a heavy, fur-lined cloak. Kaelen stood by the balcony, his broad bare back scarred with ancient battle runes, staring out at the horizon.
The magic had worn off. Or so the high priests whispered.
The chamber doors slammed open, echoing like thunder through the stone hall. High Priest Valerius strode in, his robes sweeping the floor, accompanied by Lady Vespera—a high-born dragoness who had schemed for centuries to sit upon the obsidian throne beside Kaelen.
"My King!" Valerius declared, pointing a trembling, accusatory finger directly at the shivering Lyra. "The celestial scrolls have spoken! The prophecy of the Blood Moon has been fulfilled. This mortal woman is not a blessing; she is the harbinger of ruin! The oracle foretold that a human of common blood would enter the citadel and awaken a half-breed abomination that will shatter the dragon dynasty from within!"
Lyra scrambled back against the pillows, clutching the sheets to her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs. She looked up at Kaelen, pleading for a single word of reassurance.
Kaelen turned slowly. His silver-gold eyes, usually pools of warm amber when he looked at her, were now hardened into two sheets of glacial ice. The immense, suffocating pressure of his dragon aura filled the room, crushing the air out of Lyra’s lungs.
"Kaelen..." Lyra choked out, tears stinging her eyes. "You know it’s not true. Look at me."
"A king does not gamble with the survival of his empire," Kaelen said, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of any warmth. "Valerius is right. You were a momentary madness, mortal. Nothing more."

Before Lyra could utter another word, Kaelen flicked his wrist. A surge of invisible, concussive wind picked her up and hurled her out through the open balcony doors. She fell hard onto the snowy stone courtyard below, bruised, bleeding, and utterly shattered. As the heavy iron gates slammed shut, locking her out of the citadel forever, Lyra clutched her lower abdomen, a quiet gasping sob escaping her lips. She didn't just carry her own broken heart away from that cursed fortress; she carried a secret heartbeat growing beneath her chest.
