Chapter 8 - Secrets in the Vaults

Back at the Moretti estate, the heavy iron gates closed behind the armored car with a dull, heavy thud.
Elena kicked off her high heels the moment they stepped into the private foyer, letting out a soft sigh of relief. The charity gala had been a triumphant display of social dominance, but the glittering lights and endless parade of fake smiles always left her mentally exhausted.
Dante caught her before she could walk toward the stairs, wrapping his strong arms around her waist from behind and pulling her back against his chest.
"You destroyed him tonight without lifting a finger," Dante murmured against her hair, his deep voice carrying a note of genuine amusement and pride. "Cold, calculated, and entirely ruthless. You’re becoming a true Moretti, Elena."
Elena turned in his arms, resting her hands against the lapels of his tuxedo jacket, looking up into his dark, intense eyes.
"I learned from the best," Elena replied softly. "Though I have to admit... seeing him reduced to a rented tuxedo in the corner of a room where he used to own the boardrooms was almost poetic."
Dante’s expression softened slightly, the hard, dangerous edge of the mafia don melting away into something deeper and more profound. He reached up, cupping her cheek with his warm palm.
"It was never about Julian, Elena," Dante said quietly. "You didn't destroy him for revenge. You destroyed him because you refuse to be anyone's victim ever again."
Elena went silent, her green eyes searching his face. The contract marriage that had started as a mutual pact of vengeance had slowly, imperceptibly evolved into something real—something anchored in trust, mutual respect, and an undeniable, consuming fire.
"And what about us, Dante?" Elena asked, her voice dropping to a breathless whisper. "When the dust settles, and there are no more enemies left to conquer... what happens to the contract?"
Dante leaned down, his lips brushing softly against her forehead before resting against her mouth.

"There is no expiration date on this contract, Elena," Dante whispered fiercely against her lips. "You walked into my life and took it over completely. You are my wife. Now, and for as long as I draw breath."
