Chapter 3 - The Contract of the Century

The morning sun broke over the New York harbor, casting a blinding glare across the glass skyscrapers.
Inside the private registrar’s office on the top floor of the municipal building, two very different worlds collided. Julian Montgomery stood beside his new bride, Victoria Sterling, surrounded by flashing camera crews and corporate executives. Julian looked every bit the triumphant conqueror, wearing a smug, invincible grin as he signed the marriage registry that cemented his alliance with the city's most powerful real estate dynasty.
"Smile, darling," Victoria cooed, resting her diamond-encrusted hand on Julian’s lapel. "By noon, the municipal board will approve our zoning bids, and Vanguard Engineering will be completely squeezed out of the market."
Julian adjusted his tie, his chest swelling with arrogance. "Let’s not forget, Victoria—without my legal strategy and the insider specs I lifted from Elena’s design vault, we wouldn't have a leg to stand on. Breaking that little nobody’s heart was the best business decision I ever made."
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the registrar’s office swung open with a loud, resounding crash.
The room fell instantly silent. The camera flashes stopped.
Striding down the center aisle was Dante Moretti, flanked by four armed security guards in immaculate suits. But it wasn't Dante that made Julian’s blood run cold.
Walking right beside him, holding his arm with effortless, breathtaking poise, was Elena.
She wasn't wearing a tear-stained wedding gown anymore. She was dressed in a sharp, blood-red Dior pantsuit, her hair pulled back into a sleek ponytail, wearing diamond earrings that cost more than Julian’s first luxury car. She looked like a queen surveying a room full of peasants.
Julian’s face drained of all color. He stepped backward, nearly tripping over the mahogany bench. "E-Elena? What... what are you doing here? How did you get in here?"
Elena didn't even look at him as if he were a stranger on the street. Her gaze swept past Julian and landed squarely on Victoria, whose mouth dropped open in shock.
Dante Moretti stepped forward, placing a heavy, possessive hand on Elena’s waist, pulling her slightly closer against his side. The sheer intimidation radiating from the mafia don made the corporate executives reflexively take a step back.
"Good morning, Mr. Montgomery," Dante said, his voice dripping with smooth, lethal amusement. "I wanted to personally congratulate you on your wedding. It’s always admirable when a man manages to marry his own bankruptcy."
"B-bankruptcy?" Julian stammered, his voice cracking as panic clawed at his throat. "What are you talking about? Montgomery & Hayes just secured the municipal harbor contract!"
Elena finally turned her head, fixing Julian with a cold, pitying smile.
"You secured a contract based on structural blueprints that contain a calculated, federally reportable load-bearing flaw," Elena stated clearly, her voice echoing off the marble walls. "A flaw I intentionally embedded into the master files before I cleared my desk. The moment your firm breaks ground on that harbor project tomorrow morning, the municipal inspectors will shut you down for structural compromise, and the SEC will launch an immediate fraud investigation into your asset backing."
Victoria spun around to glare at Julian, her face contorted in absolute fury. "What is she talking about, Julian?! You said her files were foolproof!"
"They were foolproof," Julian gasped, staring at Elena in absolute horror. "You... you planned this?"
May you like
"No, Julian," Elena replied smoothly, stepping closer to Dante’s protective embrace. "I just helped you sign your own death warrant. Meet my husband, Dante Moretti. We filed our marriage license twenty minutes before you walked in here."
