Chapter 5 - The Golden Cage

The Moretti estate in upstate New York was a fortress of dark stone, iron gates, and sprawling manicured gardens hidden behind miles of ancient pine trees.
When the black armored sedan pulled up to the grand entrance, Elena stepped out into the cool evening air, looking up at the imposing architecture. It was a golden cage—magnificent, untouchable, and heavily guarded.
Dante Moretti stepped out from the other side of the vehicle, walking over to stand beside her. He noticed the slight hesitation in her posture and the way her shoulders were tense beneath her red blazer.
"You don't have to look at it like a prison, Elena," Dante said softly, his deep voice carrying a strange, unexpected gentleness. "Inside these gates, no one can ever touch you again."
Elena turned her head to look at him, her green eyes searching his dark, intense face. "And outside these gates? What am I to you, Dante? A trophy wife? A business partner in a mutual war of revenge?"
Dante didn't answer immediately. He reached out, gently tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear, his thumb brushing against her cheekbone with a warmth that contrasted sharply with his reputation as an underworld kingpin.
"You are my wife on paper, Elena," Dante murmured, his amber eyes locking onto hers with a fierce, unyielding intensity. "And in reality... you are the only person in this city who had the courage to burn her own life down to get even. I respect that. And I protect what is mine."
They walked inside the grand foyer, where a row of domestic staff stood waiting to greet them. The interior was breathtaking—vaulted ceilings, crystal chandeliers, marble floors, and walls lined with priceless art. It was everything Julian had ever dreamed of buying with stolen money, but here, it was simply background noise to absolute power.
That night, Elena stood by the floor-to-ceiling window of the master suite, looking out over the dark pine forests. The adrenaline of the board meeting was beginning to fade, leaving behind a quiet, hollow exhaustion.
The heavy oak door opened softly, and Dante walked in, carrying two glasses of aged scotch. He held one out to her.
Elena took the glass, her fingers brushing against his. "Why me, Dante? Out of all the people in New York you could have partnered with... why did you choose a discarded bride?"

Dante took a slow sip of his drink, his gaze never leaving her face. "Because the world is full of people who wear masks of innocence, Elena. But a woman who has been betrayed, pushed to the edge, and decides to strike back without hesitation? That is a woman who rules empires."
