Chapter 7 - The Gala of the Century

Two weeks later, the annual Metropolitan Charity Gala at the Museum of Natural History was the most exclusive ticket in New York. Every CEO, politician, and socialite was in attendance, dressed in glittering diamonds and bespoke tuxedos.
The main doors swung open, and the entire room fell into a sudden, breathless silence.
Dante Moretti entered, dressed in a classic tuxedo that fit his powerful frame like armor. But all eyes weren't on him—they were locked entirely on the woman walking beside him.
Elena Moretti wore a breathtaking, custom-designed emerald-green silk gown that shimmered under the museum lights, accented by a diamond necklace that belonged to the Moretti family vault. She moved with an effortless, queenly grace, her green eyes scanning the ballroom with absolute confidence.
The whispers rippled through the crowd instantly.
*“Is that Elena Vance? The girl Julian Montgomery left at the altar?”*
*“She married Dante Moretti? Good lord, she didn't just bounce back—she conquered the entire board.”*
Across the ballroom, standing near the champagne tower, Julian Montgomery watched them. He looked ten years older, wearing a rented, ill-fitting tuxedo, his once-confident posture completely broken. He had been reduced to a disgraced, disbarred attorney working odd jobs for minor firms just to pay off his mounting legal debts.
As Dante and Elena walked past, Julian couldn't help himself. He stepped forward, blocking their path, his face pale and twisted with bitter humiliation.
"Elena..." Julian breathed, his voice barely audible over the orchestra. "Please... you have to listen to me. Victoria set me up. Her family used me and threw me away. We... we belong together."
Elena stopped. She didn't look angry; she looked at Julian with the same detached clinical curiosity a scientist might give to a specimen under a microscope.
Dante didn't draw a weapon, but the two enforcers behind him stepped forward instantly, their hands resting inside their jackets. Dante simply raised his hand, gesturing for them to stand down, his amber eyes locking onto Julian with chilling amusement.
"Julian," Elena said, her voice smooth and melodic. "You always did have terrible timing."
"Elena, I made a mistake!" Julian pleaded, ignoring the stares of the surrounding socialites. "I love you! I'll leave the city, I'll do anything—just tell Moretti to call off his hounds!"
Elena tilted her head slightly, a faint, beautiful smile touching her lips.
"You don't understand, Julian," Elena whispered softly. "I never hated you for leaving me at the altar. In fact... I should thank you."
Julian blinked, stunned. "Thank me?"
"If you hadn't betrayed me," Elena replied, her eyes flashing with cold, brilliant fire, "I might have spent the rest of my life playing small, building a future with a man who couldn't see my worth."
She stepped closer, her voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper that only he could hear.
"You taught me how to survive. Dante taught me how to rule. Enjoy the view from the bottom, Julian. You earned every inch of it."

Without another word, Elena turned away, linking her arm through Dante’s, and walked gracefully into the glittering ballroom, leaving Julian standing alone in the shadows of his own ruin.
