Chapter 9 - The Butterfly Locket

Six months later, the Main Line estate had completely healed from the trauma of that night.

The grand ballroom had been fully renovated, the crystal chandeliers polished to a blinding brilliance, and the security systems upgraded with military-grade AI surveillance that monitored every blade of grass on the property.

It was a warm spring morning. The estate gardens were bursting with white lilies and red roses.

Dominic walked out onto the stone terrace holding a mug of black coffee. Down on the manicured lawn, seven-year-old Sophie and four-year-old Lucy were chasing butterflies through the sunlight, their high-pitched laughter echoing across the open courtyard.

Emily Price stood nearby, watching them with a peaceful, contented smile. She was no longer wearing a servant’s apron. She had been appointed director of the Caruso Family Foundation, managing the organization’s legitimate charitable donations and community programs across the city.

“They’re getting along well,” Emily said as Dominic walked over.

“They’re family,” Dominic replied softly, watching Lucy show Sophie the diamond butterfly locket hanging around her neck.

“You gave us a life, Dominic,” Emily said, her voice filled with deep sincerity. “When Lucy spoke up at that party, I thought our lives were over. I thought we’d be collateral damage in a world we didn't belong in.”

Dominic looked down at the coffee in his mug, then back at the little girl who had saved two hundred lives with a casual observation about chocolate frosting and a black box.

“In my world, Emily, people usually look away when they see something wrong because they’re afraid,” Dominic murmured. “Lucy didn't look away. She saved my daughter. In return, I will spend the rest of my life making sure no one ever makes her feel unsafe again.”
