Chapter 1 - The Silver Ribbon

The silence in the grand ballroom was not the kind that came from politeness. It was the absolute, suffocating vacuum that precedes an explosion. Two hundred of the most powerful, ruthless, and untouchable men in Pennsylvania stood frozen beneath the cascading crystal of Dominic Caruso’s chandeliers, their eyes fixed on a three-year-old child with chocolate frosting on her cheek.

Dominic didn't shout. He didn't draw the weapon hidden beneath his tailored Brioni jacket. Instead, he took two slow, measured steps toward his daughter, Sophie, whose tiny fingers were still hooked beneath the oversized red silk ribbon of the massive gift box.

“Sophie,” Dominic repeated, his voice dangerously soft. “Step away from the table.”

Sophie blinked, her paper crown sliding slightly sideways over her brow. “Daddy? Can’t I open my present? Uncle Sal said this one was from the mystery guest.”

Across the room, Salvatore “Sal” Moretti—Dominic’s second-in-command and the man who had supposedly vetted every vendor, valet, and delivery driver for the gala—suddenly went rigid. Sal’s hand drifted toward his belt before he caught himself, forcing a strained, trembling smile onto his face.

“A mystery guest, Boss?” Sal chuckled, his voice tight and unnaturally high. “You know how these high-profile suppliers are. They love a theatrical delivery. Probably just an over-the-top stunt from the Manhattan import syndicate.”

Dominic didn't look at Sal. His dark eyes remained fixed on the box.

“Emily,” Dominic said without turning around.

Emily Price, still gripping little Lucy’s hand so tightly her knuckles were white, swallowed hard. “Yes, Mr. Caruso?”

“Take Sophie. Walk out through the French doors toward the eastern gardens. Do not look back.”

“Mr. Caruso, please,” Emily stammered, tears springing to her eyes. “She’s just a baby, she didn't mean to cause trouble, if she made this up—”

“She didn't make it up,” Dominic interrupted. He crouched down beside the enormous package, his gaze scanning the seams of the heavy wrapping paper. “Sal.”

“Boss?”

“Bring me the tactical kit from the mudroom.”

The ballroom erupted into chaotic whispers. Judges, politicians, and syndicate bosses began backing away from the center of the room toward the exits, realizing that Dominic Caruso’s palace had just been turned into a ticking clock.
