Chapter 4 - The Unraveling**

Within forty-eight hours of the emergency board meeting, Julian Duval’s life completely unraveled at a speed that left the Manhattan gossip columns spinning out of control.

Stripped of his CEO title, locked out of his executive suites, and facing impending federal investigations into the offshore shell companies I had exposed, Julian discovered just how shallow his high-society alliances truly were. The moment his financial liquidity evaporated, Dalia Fontaine’s talent agency abruptly cancelled her upcoming endorsement contracts, and within three days, Pageant Global quietly stripped her of her ambassador title due to "moral clause violations" linked to her association with a disgraced, under-investigation executive. By Friday afternoon, Dalia had packed her designer bags, cleared out Julian’s penthouse apartment while he was meeting with bankruptcy lawyers, and flown back to Los Angeles without leaving so much as a goodbye note.

I watched the media circus from the serene, sunlit sanctuary of Gabriel’s penthouse overlooking Central Park.

The stress of the past week had momentarily taken its toll, but as I sat in a plush white linen armchair with a soft cashmere throw over my legs, feeling the strong, unmistakable flutter of my baby kicking against my palm, a profound sense of peace washed over me. The ghosts of my past—the silent nights, the cruel whispers, the heartbreak of the nursery that never filled—were finally laid to rest.

Gabriel walked into the sunroom carrying a tray of fresh fruit, herbal tea, and a stack of legal documents bearing the final sign-off from the corporate restructuring committee. He set the tray down on the marble coffee table, knelt beside my chair, and pressed a tender kiss against my growing stomach.

“How are my two favorite investors doing this afternoon?” Gabriel smiled softly, looking up into my eyes with a depth of devotion that still occasionally took my breath away.

“They’re doing wonderfully,” I smiled, resting my hand in his hair. “Though I think junior is practicing for a soccer career based on the gymnastics happening in here right now.”

Gabriel laughed, a warm, rich sound that chased away any remaining shadows in the room. He picked up the legal portfolio, flipping it open to the final page.

“The intellectual property transfer is officially complete, Khloe,” Gabriel reported smoothly. “Duval Holdings has been legally dissolved, and its remaining assets have been absorbed under the new parent entity. Furthermore, the court has officially dismissed any counter-claims Julian tried to file. He’s completely legally neutralized.”

I looked out the expansive glass windows, watching the autumn leaves drift down over the park below. I felt no lingering bitterness toward Julian. Hatred required energy, and I had none left to waste on a man who had simply served as the painful, necessary catalyst to lead me to where I was supposed to be.

“Do you know what the funniest part of all this is, Gabriel?” I asked quietly.

“What’s that?”

“Julian spent five years trying to convince the world that I was incapable of surviving without him,” I murmured, a soft, confident smile touching my lips. “He thought keeping me small was the only way to make himself feel tall. And yet, the second I stepped out from his shadow, I built an empire of my own, found a man who actually cherishes me, and brought a healthy child into a world he’s no longer fit to walk in.”

May you like

Gabriel reached up, taking my face gently in his hands, his thumb brushing my cheekbone. “You didn't need his shadow, Khloe. You were always the light.”
