Chapter 2 - The Ballroom Confrontation**

The interior of the Allesian Hearts ballroom was a breathtaking display of old-money opulence, glittering beneath towering crystal chandeliers and surrounded by three hundred of New York’s most powerful elite. Bankers, tech founders, elite politicians, and old-money philanthropists stood in tightly clustered circles sipping champagne. As Gabriel and I stepped through the arched mahogany doors, the ambient chatter slowly, suffocatingly died down.

I knew those faces. I had catered to their egos, hosted their charity luncheons, and smiled politely through their thinly veiled gossip for five years while married to Julian. They were waiting for me to look defeated, haggard, and broken. Instead, I walked in beside one of the most powerful and feared billionaires in the Western Hemisphere, carrying life in my womb, radiant and entirely free.

It didn't take long to spot him.

Julian Duval stood near the VIP dais, looking every bit the golden-boy CEO in his midnight-blue tuxedo, holding a crystal flute of champagne next to Dalia Fontaine, who was draped in a blinding cascade of rented diamonds that screamed desperation. Julian was laughing at something a board member said, his posture relaxed and triumphant.

Then, his eyes drifted toward the entrance.

His smile didn't just fade—it shattered. Julian froze mid-sentence, his gaze tracking from Gabriel’s steady, protective hand resting on the small of my back, moving slowly upward, and finally locking in absolute horror onto my pronounced pregnancy bump. The glass of champagne in his hand tilted dangerously, a few drops spilling over the rim onto his sleeve. He looked like a man who had just seen a ghost walk out of a graveyard.

We didn't bypass them. Gabriel deliberately guided us straight toward Julian’s VIP circle.

“Khloe,” Julian choked out when we stopped just three feet away. My name sounded less like a greeting and more like a dying accusation. His eyes kept darting frantically from my face down to my stomach, his brain desperately trying to compute the biological impossibility of the woman he had discarded—the woman his doctors and media mouthpieces had labeled barren—standing before him visibly, beautifully pregnant.

He opened his mouth, trying to maintain his pristine public composure, and started to ask how far along I was, before abruptly snapping his jaw shut as he realized half the room was watching his every micro-expression. But Julian had never possessed the self-control to keep his toxic obsessions hidden.

His jaw tightened until the muscles bulged, and the corporate mask finally cracked entirely. He stepped forward, lowering his voice into a vicious, trembling hiss.

“Is it his?” Julian demanded, his eyes flashing with raw, possessive fury as he glared at Gabriel.

The absurdity of the question hung heavily in the air between us. Here was a man who had traded me in for a twenty-six-year-old beauty queen, a man who had watched the tabloids drag my character through the mud for years without uttering a single word of defense, standing here demanding to know the paternity of my child as if he still held a claim over my body.

I didn't blink. I looked deep into the panicked, desperate eyes of the man who had once made me believe my grief was a personal failure, and gave him the answer that would echo through the financial district by morning.

“You lost the right to ask me that a long time ago, Julian,” I said, my voice cutting through the ambient noise like a razor blade.

Before Julian could sputter a response or launch into a public meltdown, the ballroom lights dimmed dramatically, plunging the glittering room into a soft, ambient amber glow. The crisp chimes of the classical string quartet faded as the gala’s emcee stepped up to the central stage, tapping the microphone to demand everyone's attention for the evening's primary announcements.

“Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests,” the emcee’s rich baritone echoed through the hall. “Before we begin tonight’s charitable auction, we have a very special presentation regarding the structural funding of the Allesian Foundation across three continents.”

Julian took a sharp step back, trying to regain his footing, glaring at me with unconcealed venom. But the emcee continued, dropping a financial bombshell that completely rewired the power dynamics of the entire evening.

“We wish to extend our deepest, most profound gratitude to the principal benefactor whose multi-million-dollar endowment has kept our global initiatives afloat this fiscal year,” the emcee announced clearly. “Please join me in welcoming the founder of Lancaster Global and our host of honor... Mr. Gabriel Lancaster.”

The entire ballroom turned in unison, gasping as applause thundered through the room. Julian’s face turned the color of ash. He stared at Gabriel in sudden, paralyzed comprehension. Gabriel wasn't just a wealthy guest accompanying Julian Duval’s pregnant ex-wife; he was the primary financial titan whose venture capital backing controlled the very philanthropic registry that funded the pageant foundation Dalia Fontaine represented.

Julian realized, with horrifying clarity, that this was not his room, his story, or his stage. And the woman he had publicly laughed at on national television had only just begun to speak.
