Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Retaliation**

The morning after the Allesian Hearts Gala, the financial press didn't care about Dalia Fontaine’s designer gown or the charity auction’s fundraising totals. Every major headline across Wall Street, The Wall Street Journal, and financial news networks carried a single, explosive image: Julian Duval staring in sheer, unadulterated terror at me while Gabriel Lancaster stood protectively by my side, with my pregnant silhouette dominating the foreground.
*“DUVAL HOLDINGS PLUMMETS AS EX-WIFE EMERGES WITH BILLIONAIRE BACKER,”* screamed the digital ticker tape across Times Square.
Inside the sleek, hyper-modern glass-walled executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Lancaster Global, the mood was clinical and focused. I sat at the head of the polished quartz conference table, reviewing the comprehensive asset-allocation reports on my tablet while three senior corporate litigators stood nearby.
Julian’s empire was built on a fragile house of cards. During our five years of marriage, I had personally structured the intellectual property holding agreements for his primary tech assets. When Julian forced me out during our divorce settlement, he had bullied my previous legal representation into signing a lopsided non-disclosure and asset-waiver—one that contained a critical, glaring loophole regarding corporate fraud and hidden offshore subsidiary accounts that I had quietly flagged years prior.
The conference room doors swung open violently.
Julian burst into the room, looking completely unhinged. His tie was ripped loose, his hair was messy, and his bespoke suit looked like he had slept in it. Behind him, two corporate security guards trailed closely, having wisely decided not to tackle a desperate CEO in the middle of a hostile financial execution.
“Khloe! What the hell is this?!” Julian screamed, slamming his hands down onto the conference table so hard the water glasses rattled. “My chief financial officer just called me saying our primary European credit lines have been frozen! Your lawyers just slapped Duval Holdings with an emergency forensic audit alleging asset dissipation and IP theft! Have you lost your mind?!”
I didn't even look up from my tablet immediately. I calmly swiped to the next page of the audit report, took a slow sip of my lemon water, and finally raised my eyes to meet his bloodshot, panicked gaze.
“Good morning, Julian,” I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. “Though I suggest you check your tone. You’re currently standing in a private boardroom owned by Lancaster Global—the primary institutional creditor that just acquired sixty-four percent of your company's distressed debt portfolio.”
Julian stumbled backward as if he had been physically struck. His mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water.
“You... you bought my debt?” he whispered, horror dawning in his eyes. “That’s impossible. Our debt was distributed across three different Cayman shell companies—nobody outside my inner circle even knew about those accounts!”
“Nobody except the woman who built them for you,” a calm, icy voice echoed from the doorway.
Gabriel stepped into the boardroom, rolling up his shirtsleeves, his expression an absolute mask of corporate ruthlessness. He walked over to my chair, placing a warm, protective hand gently on my shoulder before looking directly at Julian.
“You spent years trying to erase her contribution, Julian,” Gabriel said quietly, his voice carrying the weight of a man who commanded billions with a single signature. “You convinced the press she was a liability, a burden, a woman incapable of standing on her own two feet. You publicly humiliated her on live television yesterday, assuming she was still the quiet, broken wife you abandoned.” Gabriel leaned across the table, his eyes narrowing. “You forgot one fundamental rule of business, Duval: never underestimate the architect of your own success.”
Julian shook his head frantically, his arrogance completely incinerated, replaced by the pathetic whimpering of a man watching his entire life's work dissolve into smoke.
“Khloe... please,” Julian choked out, his knees visibly buckling as he grabbed the back of a leather chair for support. “We can settle this. Drop the forensic audit. Call off Gabriel’s creditors. We can renegotiate the divorce terms—I’ll give you whatever settlement you want, just don't destroy the company! Dalia and I—our wedding is in three months, the board will oust me if this goes public—”
“Your board is already holding an emergency vote to strip you of your CEO title, Julian,” I interrupted coldly, sliding a single sheet of paper across the table toward him. “And as for Dalia? I’m sure she’ll love supporting you while you file for personal bankruptcy.”
Julian stared at the paper. It was a preliminary notice of shareholder ouster, signed by a majority of his own board members who had already pledged their loyalty to Lancaster Global’s restructuring initiative.

With a hollow, broken groan, Julian collapsed into the chair, burying his face in his hands as the reality of his total, absolute destruction finally settled over him.
