Chapter 6 - The Shadow from the Past

Just as the dust settled and the firm entered its most profitable quarter in a decade, a new, unexpected complication arrived at the front desk of Sterling & Vance.

It was a rainy Tuesday evening. Most of the executive staff had already cleared out, leaving the fiftieth floor quiet except for the steady hum of servers and the tapping of my keyboard.

Maya buzzed my desk intercom. “Ms. Sterling? There’s a gentleman downstairs in the lobby insisting on seeing you. He says his name is Julian Vance, and that he has urgent business regarding your late mother’s estate.”

I paused, my fingers hovering over the keyboard.

Julian Vance. The estranged younger brother of Marcus Vance, and a man who had been legally disowned by the Vance family trust ten years ago after a bitter dispute over venture capital fraud.

“Send him up, Maya,” I said cautiously, reaching down to lock my bottom desk drawer where the sensitive family trust documents were stored.

Five minutes later, the private elevator chimed, and Julian stepped into my office.

He looked nothing like his polished, corporate brother Marcus. Julian wore a rumpled trench coat, his hair unkempt, his eyes bloodshot and darting around the luxurious office with the desperate energy of a gambler on his last hand.

“Chloe Sterling,” Julian rasped, offering a tight, unpleasant smile as he walked uninvited across the plush rug and sat down in the chair opposite my desk. “You’ve certainly made a name for yourself lately. The Silver Queen of Wall Street.”

“Cut the charm, Julian,” I said flatly, resting my elbows on the desk and interlocking my fingers. “You were disowned by your family a decade ago, and you have no legal standing in this building. Why are you here?”

Julian chuckled darkly, reaching into his coat pocket and pulling out a yellowed, water-stained manila folder. He tossed it onto my desk.

“Because your sweet little stepsister, Victoria, before she fled to Europe like a coward, sold me something very interesting,” Julian purred, leaning forward. “Something that proves your entire corporate empire—and your mother’s legacy—was built on a lie.”
